1 Defect

POV Ophelia “Why won’t she speak?! Is there something wrong with her?” My mom shrieked as I looked between the doctor and her horrified expression. “She’s already five years old and I haven’t heard a word from her!” “Mrs.Hawthorne, sometimes children are born with different abilities, and –” “Abilities?! This isn’t an ability! This is a defect! My child is broken! Fix her!” She snarled after cutting the doctor short. “My husband will think ill of me if I keep this thing around! We are the Gamma family of this pack for goddess’s sake! We are not weak, and we are not broken. Therefore, she cannot be mine.” She added and I winced finally putting two and two together. The darkness in her glare made that painfully clear. I was broken. Therefore, I did not fit in with our–I mean–her family. “Mrs.Hawthorne, please. If you would allow me to give you options for treatment, this is a very easy process to work with. With some time, I’m sure we can find the cause and a clear solution. Ophelia is very intelligent, and she seems to react to her environment, so her hearing is top notch. As we are wolves, she can always use mind link in the future when her wolf awakens. For now, teach her sign language and she will be able to communicate just fine.” The doctor added as he absently scribbled something in his notes. “What’s going on? Why is momma so angry?” I asked my wolf while she whimpered in my mind. “It’s because we won’t talk, Lia. I know this is hard for us but maybe we can put in more effort?” My wolf asked and I winced. I never wanted to speak. Never. “I…I can’t.” “But we are special! The world needs to know that. Your family may be one thing but…think about it this way. Hiding behind your silence is not going to help you.” “Not after what my family said. How cruel they all have treated me. She’s even lying to the doctor right now. She won’t tell him that I won’t speak. Not that I can’t speak.” I winced remembering all the times I was silenced because of how incompetent I am…according to them. “Well maybe –” My wolf was cut short when I was yanked off the cushioned table. It took all of my energy to keep myself from breaking an ankle. “Forget it you quack! I’ll deal with this girl how I see fit! She is my child. She will follow our family’s prestige or she will be thrown out with the rest of the trash.” She growled defensively before dragging me out of the hospital. As I was pulled from the office with a doctor hollering after us, eyes from the grown-ups darted my way as she continued to pull on my small arm. I wanted to ask what was so wrong, but I already knew. It was me. It was always me. When we made it outside, she shrieked irritably at nothing and no one. Then, turned on her heels to face me with raging eyes. “Fine! If you won’t talk and the doctor doesn’t know how to fix this then you can just do what you are good at: Making sure the gamma family is taken care of. You are already good at being silent. Every time you open that hideous mouth of yours, all I hear is inadequate ideas a frivolous thoughts. You better be good at following orders because from now on, that is all you will do. I don’t want to see or hear from you if you are not being ordered to do something by the gamma family who will no longer associate with filth like you. I’ve always said, you were the spare we never wanted to have and now this! This has proven me right!” She snapped and I flinched. “Now you understand?!” I squealed to my wolf. She whimpered but I could tell she was finally conceding to the reality that this family is too cruel to be trusted. “Well?!” My mother, I mean Ms.Hawthorne, shrieked again. As I nodded once she straightened her shoulders and nodded. “Good. If you are going to be a waste of space, I know the perfect place for you to earn your keep after you complete your chores around the house.” Chores? Orders? I really am nothing to this woman. “Momma? Why do I –” “Silence! If you won’t use your voice, then I don’t want to hear anything from you! You shouldn’t even be able to mind link yet. It’s creepy! Why can’t you be more like your sister, huh? You two are twins after all, but you would think you were a completely different species!” Breathing out heavily she combed the stray hairs away from her face. “Either way. She will be an only child like she deserves soon, so it’s irrelevant if you cannot be as perfect as my daughter.” With that, I dropped my head and silently followed her to wherever she had in mind. I wasn’t going to push any further. It’s not worth it. As she said, orders are orders. ---Eight Years Later--- I stared out of the hallway window and sighed heavily after finishing the third bathroom on the main floor of the packhouse. As this place was meant for community and congregation, there were so many rooms here but the ones everyone hated to clean were the bathrooms. Therefore, they gave that job to the girl who couldn’t speak for herself. I want to say something. I desperately do, but…but every time I open my mouth, something gets in the way. It…it’s been so long since I’ve even tried to speak that I don’t even know what my voice sounds like anymore. The luxuries of being repressed into submission. Now…I’m stuck doing the dirty work. “Hey! Quit stalling! The toilets aren’t going to clean themselves.” Duston, the alpha’s eldest son, shouted at me before a splash of cold water fell over my head. I shivered as the water dripped from my skin and baggy clothes. I wasn’t really fed much since my family disowned me. Not to mention, everyone criticizes me for being curvy. So, when I received whatever hand-me-downs the gamma’s daughter would part with, they would never fit me quite right. “My cousins will be here soon, and everything needs to be spotless! Get to work and clean this mess up. Disgusting.” I grit my teeth, quickly cleaned up the mess he made, and took a deep breath before doing my best to get my clothes back to a somewhat normal state. The last thing I wanted was Duston’s cousins to get ahold of this look. I’m sure they would have a lot to say, and it wouldn’t be nice in any way. Just like him. I turned toward the door and raced toward the kitchen. Unfortunately for me, I was too late. I fell to my knees, and I heard a giggle almost immediately. I know who that is. My twin, Felicity. The perfect gamma’s daughter. “Sometimes I wonder how you are supposedly related to me.” She hissed. Trust and believe, I wonder that every day. Not one bit of us looked the same and nothing about her horrible attitude was anything I wanted to aspire to be. Where she had long, straight blonde locks, I had long black hair in deep waves, ashen from minimal maintenance. Where she had long legs and toned arms, I had sickly limbs and curves that never fit my awkward form. Not to mention her stunning blue eyes and my lack luster grey ones. Fraternal wouldn’t even be the half of it. We were nothing alike. “Don’t worry about her Felicity. It’s not worth it.” Joshua smirked. “She’s worked here for years and not a peep out of her.” “Not to mention all the work I’ve done to…fix her problem and I haven’t even received a proper thank you for it.” Duston snapped. He reached out to probably yank my hair, but his hand froze when a sigh was heard behind him. “Come on, Duston. It’s not funny anymore.” I gasped and tucked my knees up to my chest. “She doesn’t even fight back. What’s the point? How many years do you plan on bothering her?” It was one of Duston’s cousins. One of the quadruplets. I guess they were here early. They are nowhere near as horrible as Joshua and Duston, but I don’t know why it made me feel so embarrassed when I ended up caught by one of them in such a state. I’m already thirteen and he’s right. I’ve been working here almost every day since the gamma female made me all those years ago. There’s no reason for me to fight them anymore if they were going to make it twenty times worse by calling the gamma or…even worse, Duston’s parents. “Whatever. Let’s go train Mason. I have some new moves to show you.” Duston said. Mason turned a glance towards me but didn’t offer me a hand before disappearing down the hall with Joshua and Duston while my sister continued to fawn over all three of them. “I know you made me look dumb in front of Mason on purpose. You are going to pay!” Duston shouted through my link. I winced as his voice rang through my normally silent mind. The question was, how will he get me back for something I didn’t do? Why did he even bother? Did he not hear what Future Alpha Mason said?! “What are you doing on the floor?! I didn’t leave you here to lounge around!” I jumped to my feet and bowed my head. I guess I had my answer. The gamma female, Mother, came storming up behind me and her hand connected with my cheek faster than I could defend myself. “Why do you even bother to ask that girl?” The gamma….Father. “Get out of our way. We have a meeting to deal with.” I nodded and continued my race to the next bathroom. The less I have to deal with them the better.
