I stared at the clock in the wall, following the second hand as its tick permeated silence. Thirty seconds, twenty five, ten seconds, time was almost up. When it hit 4, I shifted my Attention back to what was in front of me. An ancient man stood up, spectacles almost falling off.
“Alright you kids, listen up. I don’t want to see y’all in here again or next time I’ll put you all to work.” He chimed off, repeating the same phrase he uses every time. He’s the best detention sitter at the school, other teachers will pry and try to figure out the problem behind the actions. Why are by you always late, they’d ask. Why didn’t you complete your homework? Too many uncomfortable questions that I can’t answer. That man had been at the school for over forty years, and passed up his retirement to continue working there. He was easily the most boring, yet most respected physics teacher.
I stood up, stretching my back and listening to the cacophony of pops. I look around, making contact with a familiar face. We grin and shake our heads, then, after gathering our stuff, walk out the door. This school is old, with barely any modern fitted technology. Some teachers still use cart projectors, including our favorite dinosaur we just left. We headed out the archaic front doors and I relished that beam of sunshine that warmed up my face. Then a sudden jolt ruined my moment of basking.
“So what did you do this time Jake?” Asked my friend from before. He was a little shorter, slightly built, and all 5’6” of him was pure pent up energy. Even while asking me, he was drumming a beat onto his leg and his body was slightly shaking from the need to be active. I grinned, shaking my head
“Same thing as always, overslept my alarm. Got a double detention for forgetting my homework as well.” I replied, a repeated life perfected that he believes it without question. I feel bad for lying, but there’s no way he could accept the truth. What if he found out his best friend was a Lycan? He’d either go crazy or turn into a hunter, and with his energy that would be a very bad result for my family.” Mouth off to a teacher again Barry?”
He laughed, “I asked Mr. Bern to explain the history of segregation and how it was like for his family. When he wouldn’t I called him racist, thus ending me up back in detention.” I just shook my head, grinning. Mr. Bern was a very stubborn white man, proud of his nationality. There was direct ties between his family and certain suprememacists groups, that hated on all other. He was another menace to modern society, In my personal opinion. Soon his ride arrived and we said our goodbyes. I started walking away from the building.
Our town is quaint, small and relatively unremarkable, stuck on the verge of modernization. We had a mall where all the normal kids go to hang out and pose amongst themselves, hoping they’ll get more popularity. If only those were the types of problems I had, where I had nothing else to worry about such as those who like and don’t like me or if I looked cool. My life is entirely different, a direct correlation to the town. I’m stuck on an ancient path, but not the one my ancestors could have predicted. I continue walking, past the mall and our town’s only grocery store. I hit the edge of the city, and then turn off into the woods surrounding. I head through with a purpose, never questioning my position. Even if I hadn’t been in those woods all my life, I’d know where I was headed. There’s a scent in the air that normal people can’t smell, only animals can pick it up. It is the smell of my pack, all interwoven into a cologne or an odor, depending on their mood. It was clear that I was late. I arrive into the clearing, feeling the eyes of everyone turn into me, bristling with apprehension then quickly to recognition. An extremely built man rose to his feet.
“Your late. “ he states simply yet I can feel his gaze probe me. His golden eyes betrayed nothing but I can tell he wasn’t pleased with me. “ we’ve been gathered for an hour.”
I lower my eyes, trying my best to hide my irritation.”I’m sorry Adrian. Got caught up at school due to me being late.” The rest of the pack snickered, relishing the chance to put me down. His eyes narrowed at the mention of school.
“It’s your senior year. Are you telling me that you can’t manage your time between us and them properly?” I quickly shook my head. There’s many in the pack who never finished high school, choosing their loyalty over knowledge. I didn’t want to stop going, to give up either. “If you can’t then you know the choice you have to make. We, as a pack, are one. We don’t abandon our pack” his eyes narrowed even further, pinned onto me. The rest of the pack laughed harder, embellishing the shame of that fact. “ Tonight you and Roxwell have another task, make sure to be here on time. Another tardiness and you’ll know just how much I care about your schooling or family. Rox will give you the details later. For now, the meeting is dismissed.” After his dismissal, the rest of the packhorse up and got ready to leave. One young adult stared at me, Roxwell, until I looked back. He’s eyes glinted maliciously, the silver slightly shining. Great, another night of menial tasks to try and wear me down, with a berate of insults and scorns even though we were a couple years apart. Such is the life of an Omega.
I turned away, trying to ignore the stares and jeers being whispered. I headed home, a little house in the suburbs. My mother was home, cooking on the stove.
“ Hey Jake, your home late. Something happen at school?” My mother asked.
“ no mam, just hung out with Barry.” I lied, gritting my teeth. I hated lying to her but I didn’t want to expose her to what she can’t understand. Sometimes lying is best for the safety of the people closest to you. “What’s for dinner?” I questioned, in order to change the subject.
“Spaghetti and meatballs, your siblings are up stairs doing their homework. Dinner should be ready in about an hour.” My mom replied, satisfied with my explanation. I head up into my room, drop off my bag, then head to the bathroom, shutting the door. In there I look in the mirror, hating myself for lying to my mother, hating the situation I’ve been placed into. I clench my fist, as my family wasn’t always in the omega bloodline. We were disgraced, by a family member that hadn’t been seen since. Not since my grandfather abandoned the pack, disgracing our name. What could make an Alpha abandon his pack, his family?! What could make him leave us with that shame?! I roll these thoughts back and forth in my head but still no answers come to mind, so I look into the mirror and study my reflection. My slim, slightly muscular frame, my locks of hair pushed back carelessly. I stare into the mirror, into my light blue eyes, and then slowly let the wolf out. I watch as the hair on my body thicken slightly, as my canines sharpened, and my eyes start glowing, a blue shine, tinged with white. I stare for a few seconds then let go, reverting back into my natural state. I shudder, holding back my thoughts of repulsion and hate. I am a monster, but I am also human. I’m just the bottom of the food chain, an omega disgraced.
