Nicki leaned over bracing herself on her cane as she reached into the hot oven removing the hot cookie tray. She placed it on the cooling rack counter and tossed the oven mitt on the counter. She shut the oven and then inspected the finished cookies. She picked up one from the tray. It was hot, but that’s how she liked them. She took a bite and was very pleased with how soft and gooey it was the chocolate chips perfectly melted. While the cookies cooled she hobbled over to the island where she picked up the bowl of clams and mussels she had bought earlier that day. She then limped back to the two large pots on the stove top and dumped them in to steam them open while boiling some spinach pasta in the other pot. Dominic had been gone all day setting up the gala in downtown LA. He had told her he would be back around five to shower and get ready for the show later that night. Nicki had been sure she would only be in the way, so she had stayed at the beach house. They had been alone because his brothers and their guests had decided to spend the week out on the water offering Dominic and Nicki some privacy. Since she was alone, all-day Nicki needed something to do. Dominic had left her the number of a personal shopper who would go to the store for her and buy anything she wanted. So that morning she had made a list and called the number. Three hours later she had three bags of groceries and an amazing array of fresh seafood. While the seafood steamed, open Nicki picked up the wooden spoon from the counter and stirred the homemade alfredo sauce she had made and was simmering to keep warm. She had never made seafood pasta before, but Nicki was a fairly good cook, and she generally knew what was supposed to go into this dish, so she decided to give it a try. As she drained the pasta and began to plate it, she heard the door. Dominic must have just gotten home. Moments later she looked back over her shoulder to see him come into the kitchen. He smiled at her and placed his keys and cell phone down on the island as he made his way over to her. He wrapped his arms around her from behind and nuzzled her neck playfully making her giggle. “What are you doing in here?” He grinned. “Making dinner.” She said. “Seafood pasta.” “You didn’t have to cook doll; we could have gone out.” He said as she dipped a tasting spoon into the sauce and offered it to him. He opened his mouth, and she placed the spoon in his mouth letting him taste the sauce. “That is good. You made that from scratch?” “Yes, do you like it?” “It’s the best sauce I’ve ever had.” He said kissing her cheek. “You are a master in the kitchen. Ooo, cookies.” He let go of her and snatched up a still warm cookie and took a bite. “Oh, these are fantastic.” Dominic grinned at her mischievously. “You are quite the little homemaker, aren’t you?” “It’s nothing. Before my injury, I used to do this kind of work three times a day every day.” She said as she leaned her hip and cane against the counter so she could use both hands to plate their dinner. She made to pick up both their plates and take them to the table, but Dominic put the last of the cookie in his mouth and swooped in taking the plates from her and taking them to the table so she could take her cane and get to the table with less trouble. He placed the plates on the table and then pulled out her chair as she reached the table. Nicki sat down, and he slid her into the table. He took the seat next to hers, and they enjoyed a quiet dinner alone. She was pleased to see him eat everything as he told her about his day. They were lost in the enjoyment of being alone when his cell phone rang. He stood up and walked over to the island and picked up his cell phone. It was a quick conversation, and then Dominic hung up. “I lost track of time we’re late.” He said. “We need to get dressed and get out of here. I have to be there when the doors open.” “You go shower I’ll clean up and get changed.” She told him. He didn’t argue he left the room to go shower. Nicki did her best to clean up, but it was slow going and awkward to move around. Once she had the dishwasher loaded she turned it on and made her way to the bedroom to change. She knew she was going to need a dress for the galas, so she had packed the black dress and brace she had worn to the last show. She took her black dress from her suitcase as well as the black pumps that went with it. Nicki changed into the dress. Once she had the dress on, she looked in the mirror and admired the beautiful garment. The water stopped, and moments later Dominic came out of the shower in nothing but a clean pair of shorts. He smiled at her as he walked over to the suitcase and took out a pair of black designer slacks. “Is that the only dress you brought?” He asked, pulling his pants on and zipped up. He then walked over to her and helped her zip up the back of her dress. She sat down on the bed and put her ill-fitted brace on then slipped her feet in the pumps while he finished dressing. He put on a maroon dress shirt with matching tie and then pulled on a black tailored suit jacket. She watched as he ran a comb through his dark hair and quickly styled it with gel. He looked good, but then he always looked good. She had decided to leave her hair down tonight. Nicki took her cane and stood up. She was unsteady on her feet. She wasn’t used to heels, and her injury didn’t make it any easier. “It’s the only dress I own.” She admitted. “We will have to rectify that.” He said tucking his wallet and cellphone into the inner pocket of his jacket. “I can’t afford a new dress. I couldn’t afford this one.” She said. “Will worry about that at another time.” He said as she turned to the look at herself in the mirror to be sure she looked presentable to be at his side. Dominic stood behind her and smiled at her through the mirror. “You look great.” He said and headed for the door. “Come on let’s go.” They drove to the gala at what Nicki was sure was breakneck speed. They parked in the back and entered through the employee entrance in the back of the building. They walked as fast as Nicki could move with Dominic waiting anxiously a few feet ahead of her. She could tell he was in a hurry, but he was waiting for her. He was very good about it, but she knew she was keeping him. When they finally made it to the show the doors were already open, and people were filling the showroom. They quickly made their way to the glass staircase, and Nicki remained at the bottom while Dominic rushed up to the balcony level and spoke to his publicist. Suddenly the publicist took a microphone that tapped into the room’s speaker system. He drew the crowd’s attention as he and Dominic stood by the banister and he formally introduced Dominic. Everyone was clapping, and the publicist handed the microphone to Dominic. He offered the crowd his easy smile, and Dominic welcomed everyone to his show thanking them for their support and telling them how he looked forward to speaking with everyone tonight. Then he told them all to enjoy the evening. He ended with a playful, witty joke, and everyone laughed and applauded him one more time. He then handed the microphone back to his publicist. He walked back to the stairs stopping at the top when a middle-aged couple stopped him to talk. He was very polite. All smiles. He spoke with them a moment and then excused himself and descended the staircase to join Nicki at the bottom. He offered her his arm since she had left her cane in the car. As they walked around Nicki noticed that scattered around the even were small sitting spaces with white leather chairs and flower vases where people could sit, drink champagne, and discuss the art. “I made sure they set up these resting areas all around the room so you could sit down when you got tired and not draw attention to yourself.” He said quietly and then smiled and nodded hello to another couple. “You did this just for me?” She asked as he walked her to a chair. “Yes. Usually, the only thing in the room is the art but I made a few requests, and the gala was accommodating.” He said gently easing her onto one of the chairs. Once she was seated, he grabbed a glass of champagne from a passing waiter and offered it to her. “I have to mingle, but I will check in on you when I can.” He said and leaned over placing a soft kiss to her lips. “Enjoy the show.” Nicki sipped her drink as she watched him disappear into the crowd and mingle. She looked around at the displays around her. She admired the paintings. He was talented. As the night went on a few people had stopped to talk to her and Dominic had joined her a few times to help her walk around the exhibit showing her some of the other art. They stopped a few times when he was talking to some of his guests. Nicki remained quiet and held on to his arm listening to them talk and smiling politely and shaking hands when Dominic would introduce her to people. When her leg began to hurt Dominic would walk her to a sitting area and let her rest while he continued mingling. She was sitting with a glass of champagne and a stuffed mushroom watching Dominic talking to a middle-aged politician as they discussed one of his paintings. Nicki sighed and sipped her drink as she looked around and listened to the music over the intercom. It was playing but not loud so people could still talk. Dominic shook hands with the politician and then came over to her. “You feel like walking again?” He asked offering her his hand. Nicki quickly ate the mushroom and placed the half-empty glass down. She took his hand, and he helped her to her feet. They moved slowly through the showroom with Nicki leaning heavily on his arm. “You look bored?” He commented as they strolled along. “I was just listening to the music.” She said softly. “The music?” He asked, and then he went quiet as if listening to the music for the first time. “You know I’ve never listened to the music at these things. I always just sort of tuned it out.” Suddenly he smiled as the music changed to a slow ballad. “I know this one.” He commented. “I like this one.” She confessed. Dominic stopped walking; he turned to Nicki. “Let’s dance.” He said as he took her into his arms. “What right here?” She asked a little surprised as he held her close and slowly started to sway her back and forth. “Why not?” He smiled taking her arms and lifting them to his shoulders as he started to waltz her around the limited space between the exhibits. Nicki looked around at everyone watching them. “People are looking at us.” “Let them look.” He grinned his smiling eyes fixated on her. “They are just jealous that I have the most beautiful woman in the room in my arms.” Nicki couldn’t stop from smiling. She felt a little silly dancing when no one else was, but she found she rather enjoyed being in Dominic’s arms. He gazed into her eyes, and his voice was low as he sang along to the love song. Dominic was such a free spirit; it was hard not to get lost in his arms. As they danced, it was almost as if the rest of the people in the room faded away and it was just the two of them. It was moments like this when Nicki was so glad her sisters had talked her into coming with him. She honestly couldn’t remember ever being so happy. When she was with Dominic she was contented, he had a way of making her feel beautiful. When she was in his arms, and he was smiling down at her, she felt like she was the only woman in the world. He was such an amazing man, and it baffled her that he was interested in her. As the song came to an end, they came to a standstill, and Dominic’s hands came up and framed her face as his head dipped low and he kissed her deeply in front of everyone. It was a perfect moment if there ever was one. As the kiss ended Nicki noticed someone take their picture. She was dazed for a moment, but Dominic put his arm around her waist and pulled her close. “Smile doll.” He whispered in her ear and then he turned them both to the handful of cameras in front of them. His arm still around her Dominic held her close while the media covering the event took their picture. The attention didn’t even seem to faze him. It was like he was used to it. For the rest of the night, Nicki was at his side while Dominic worked the room. When the night was over Dominic conversed with his publicist as they discussed the sales for the night. Nicki was astonished by the total figure of that night’s sales. It was no wonder Dominic could live as he did. He had made a ridiculous profit off one night of hobnobbing. Once the business concluded, Dominic walked Nicki out to the car, and they drove back to the beach house. It was three in the morning when they walked into the bedroom. “I can’t believe it. Is it like that every night?” She asked taking a seat on the foot of the bed and kicking off her shoes. “Pretty much.” He said as he shrugged off his jacket and draped it over the chair in the corner of the room. He was kicking off his shoes as he watched Nicki rub her knee. It had been a long night, and he leg was stiff and cramping. “Are you ok?” He asked as he loosened his tie and took it off. “My leg hurts.” She complained. “I think I overdid it.” “You really should bring your cane to these things.” “People would stare.” She complained as she heaved herself back up onto her feet and reached for the zipper of her dress. Dominic came up behind her and unzipped her dress. His hands moved over her shoulders, and he pushed her dress down letting it pool at her feet. Then without warning, Dominic swept Nicki off her feet and carried her to the head of the bed. He gently placed her down, so her back was against the headboard, and her legs were stretched out in front of her. He sat down next to her and lifted her legs draping them over his lap. He took the foot of her injured leg in his hands and firmly began to massage her foot and ankle, working his hands up her cramping calf and over her still knee working the tight muscles loose again. When he started it was painful, and she grits her teeth but after a few minutes the pain subsided, and she was starting to feel better. His hands were strong, and he was very good at giving a deep tissue massage. As the pain subsided, she smiled at him. He smiled back at her. “Feel better?” “Yes, thank you.” “You don’t need to thank me. It gives me an excuse to touch you.” He said as he moved her legs and stood up. She watched as he unbuttoned his shirt and took it off. He removed his pants and came over and climbed into bed with her. “You don’t need an excuse to touch me.” She said as he stretched out on the mattress next to her. He moved closer, and his hand came to rest on her inner thigh. “That sounds like an invitation.” He leaned in and kissed her neck as his hand slid up her leg and caressed her through her panties. She moaned softly at the sensation, and she felt him grin against her neck. “That is such a sexy sound.” He whispered in her ear. Dominic shifted until he was hovering over her kissing his way down her body. She giggled as he placed soft kisses on her belly as he took hold of her panties and pulled them down her legs. Nicki sucked in a sharp breath when Dominic’s lips found her s*x. She relaxed back against the bed as his lips and tongue worshiped her damp folds. It wasn’t long before he had her squirming beneath his mouth lifting her hips to his mouth as the sensation built. He brought her to climax, and Nicki arched her back and moaned his name. Dominic kissed his way back up her body until his lips found hers. He reached down and pushed his shorts down and out of his way. He settled between her legs and sunk deep into her as his mouth ate at hers. He took her deep and slow as his hands moved over her body and his tongue plundered her mouth. It was gentle and intense, and Nicki was consumed by sensation. Soon she was rocking her hips up against Dominic, and she heard him moan in response. Her hands roamed over Dominic’s back holding him close. She loved the feel of his body against hers. The feel of his hands on her flesh. The feel of his lips against her own. It was like heaven in his arms. They burnt away the rest of the night lost in each other’s arms until they were too exhausted to move. And when it was over Dominic held Nicki in his arms his body behind her. Her own tucked in tight against him. She could feel his warm breath at the back of her neck as they dozed off together. *** Dominic sat on the side of the bed watching Nicki sleep. He had woken early because he had some business to take care of that day, but as he got dressed, he kept looking back at the beauty slumbering peacefully in the bed. He had sat down and watched her. He gently brushed her dark hair out of her face and behind her ear. It was strange. He had known Nicki for such a short time, but he was taken with her. She was the sweetest thing he had ever known. So meek and innocent. He loved her down-home personality. He’d never been this happy, this content with anyone else. She was perfection in his eyes. She asked for nothing, but he wanted to give her the world. They just fit together so flawlessly. He chuckled at himself. Who would have guessed his perfect match would be in some one-horse town across the country thousands of miles away from where he was; or that some computer dating service would bring them together. For once he was grateful for his mother’s meddling. Had she not, he would have never found Nicki. Dominic stood up. He had to get going. He leaned over the bed and placed a soft kiss against her forehead. She stirred but didn’t wake. He took one last look at the woman in his bed and then went to work.
