Jack was in a daze as they wheeled him through a hospital on a stretcher. He saw light after light scrolling past on the ceiling. Doctors in blue scrubs surrounded him, and he knew that they were talking about his condition, but he couldn't bring himself to focus. Any attempt to do so only made the headache worse.
Maybe he was wrong. Maybe Slade could just turn the pain on and leave it on? How long had it been? An hour? Surely, the man wouldn't keep concentrating on Jack for that long.
Anna was right behind the doctors at the foot of his stretcher. He could hear her trying to break through so that she could see him. “Operative Lenai,” one man said with a glance over his shoulder. “Please give us some space.”
