Jack woke up with a gasp.
He sat up, groaning, and rubbed his eyes with the tips of his fingers. “God damn it.” His voice was raw and rough. Adrenaline kept whipping through his system, making his every muscle taut.
One look around the room and he could see that it was still utterly dark. The windows, now fully opaque, kept out the city lights. They would not become transparent until morning.
Anna sat up behind him, wrapping her arms around his tummy. Inhaling slowly, she nuzzled the back of his shoulder. “That's the third time this week,” she said in a voice filled with sympathy. The feeling of her warm skin against his was almost enough to help him relax. Almost but not quite.
