Ava’s POV I snapped out of it immediately, tore my gaze from Victor, and rushed downstairs. He followed at an unhurried pace, each step measured, utterly composed, as though he hadn’t just looked at me like food meant to be devoured. “Miriam, is the chicken soup ready? Give some to Ava,” Victor called out. His voice carried through the house. Then he walked off toward the living room as if nothing about this was strange. A moment later, Miriam appeared, the rich scent of chicken broth curling through the air, warm and comforting.
