Chapter 6: The Truth in the Blood Tests

413 Words
Merlin hadn’t expected that there were still quite a few people waiting for blood tests. It turned out that all the residents who were still alive in the neighborhood had been gathered here, which explained the eerie quiet inside the building. After inquiring, he learned that around 1 AM, people in protective suits had gone door to door, delivering a single message: everyone should not fall asleep under any circumstances. This matched what Cat Cat had said. Later, the authorities had gathered everyone together, which is why many people hadn't slept at all. Merlin was an exception. He had already been asleep and, due to the soundproofing of his apartment and his deep sleep, he hadn't heard the knocking and had missed it. Now, everyone was on edge. With many neighbors having died under mysterious circumstances, a sense of panic was spreading among the residents. “We need to know the truth. Is there an infectious disease? Otherwise, why are the staff so heavily protected?” “Yeah, what’s really going on? Tell us clearly.” “If you don’t explain, we won’t get our blood tested.” “Right!” The dissatisfaction born out of fear erupted suddenly but was to be expected. Merlin watched as the residents began to protest. He, too, wanted to know what was happening. Given that the staff had been so adamant about not letting people sleep, Merlin was sure they knew something. At that moment, someone in a protective suit suddenly collapsed to the ground with a thud. Everyone was stunned. The previous commotion fell silent. Staff members quickly moved in to check on the situation. The scene turned chaotic, but the residents, instead of continuing their protest, began to help. “What happened?” “I don’t know.” “Sudden death?” “Terrifying.” Merlin couldn’t get close, and he didn’t know first aid, so he couldn’t help even if he got in. He had noticed the young man earlier; he had likely fallen asleep leaning against the wall after working all night. Soon, the person was taken away for emergency care, but Merlin had a feeling this might not be as simple as a sudden death. With this incident, everyone was hesitant to continue protesting. After successfully having their blood drawn, Merlin and the other residents were arranged in the lobby, gathered around tables eating breakfast and watching TV. However, no one was actually watching TV; most were engaged in quiet discussions.
