The impact was devastating. Pain exploded across my spine as the force sent us flying. I maintained my grip on the girl, making sure to take the brunt of the landing as we hit the frozen ground and rolled. My vision went white with agony, but I could feel the child squirming in my arms, alive and unharmed.
Shocked gasps and calls reached my ears but in that moment my brain didn't register anything but the pain. For some reason, there was a strange ringing in my ears, one that I knew didn't just come from the hit but from something else entirely.
And uncomfortable heat spread throughout my entire body, unlike anything I'd ever felt before.
