Saltwater clawed its way down her throat, leaving behind a trail of fire as it tried to reach her lungs. It singed her nose and her mouth and her eyes, which were still wide open. Everything was blurry, out of focus, but Meriwa could still watch as the sun scattering across the ocean surface grew further away, the light beginning to fade. The cold water was like a thousand tiny knives trying to pierce her skin, a juxtaposition of the searing pain in her ankle. Down and down, she was dragged. Meriwa fought, her hands and arms scrambling at the water above her. But she wasn’t strong enough – her human body wasn’t made for this. It was failing her. She couldn’t fight against whatever had her bones and flesh clenched between its sharp teeth, there was nothing for her to use as leverage.
