Meriwa swallowed and tried to focus past the dull buzz in her ears to hear what might be going on beyond the other room. Her leg hurt and she had to lean heavily against the door, making it creak and mask any sound from outside. She would never admit it, but the sight of the torch lights scanning the area had frightened her. What was Lilah going to do if they did come inside? She said herself that she wasn’t much of a fighter. Was she going to hide in her bedroom and hope they wouldn’t notice? Surely not. Lilah was too smart for that.
