Walker strained his ears, trying to get past the sounds of wind, an exhale blowing out of Meriwa’s nose and fanning across his hand, and the crickets in the distance, to hear what Jackson was up to. He thought he might be able to hear him moving around, boots on wood, but he couldn’t be sure. He could just be imagining it.
