Esme
“Mason, that’s so not fair!” I laughed as he tackled me to the ground. My body tensed at the body contact between us and I couldn’t help but become excited. I knew that he would be mine, my mate. I mean, technically I don’t know because we don’t turn 18 for another week but I had heard of wolves knowing their mate before they were of age. It was the only way to explain the way his touch effected my body, the calmness his presence brought me, the smile he brought to my face just by looking at me. “Oh come on E don’t be such a sore loser” he laughed as he began to help me up from the ground. I loved training with him, almost as much as I loved him, it was the perfect excuse to feel his touch. I stood to look the boy in front of me up and down, taking in his beauty. Not only was mason a werewolf, he was the future alpha of our pack meaning he was built bigger than most of the people here. “Anyway, it’s time to go in and get washed up dinner will be soon” he continued. I stuck my bottom lip out in protest and he brought his hand up to caress my face. “Soon E, just one more week and you may not have my undivided attention. How on earth are you going to share me with another?” he joked as he removed his hand from where it had been touching me just a second ago. My stomach dropped as reality set in once again - he didn’t want me, of course he didn’t. Why on earth would someone like Mason want me - after all he was going to be alpha he deserved someone beautiful and strong by his side. Granted, I was most definitely the strongest she-wolf in the pack and I may have been secretly learning all of the Luna duties over the last 3 years. The truth was, Mason only saw me as his best friend that he grew up with, one of the guys and that probably wouldn’t change unless we were mates. Was it so wrong of me to believe he was destined to be mine? I didn’t think so. “Hellooooo - Earth to Esme!”. His voice pulled me out of my thoughts and back into reality. “S-sorry what?” I stuttered, feeling my cheeks blush at the realisation he was now staring at me. “Everything okay?”. He was doing it again, looking at me in the way that made me desire him more than I wanted to admit. “Of course everything’s okay”I lied. I was picking up my pace now as we headed in the direction of the pack house, trying to think of a diversion to change the subject. “What was that abo-“ he stopped mid sentence as I started to race ahead. “Race ya back to the pack house” I shouted, looking behind me as Mason smirked. “Oh, it’s on” he said as he started to gain in on me. I was going to have to start being more careful, we only had a week left until I knew for sure, and I couldn’t risk suspicion in case I was completely wrong. It would only make it more embarassing and hurt more. “Please, please don’t let me be wrong” I thought to myself as we neared the pack house.

Dinner had been uneventful, as everyone had gathered in the dining room. Of course, just like every other day I had to endure every unmated she wolf eye Mason for the entire duration. As soon as I had finished eating I had excused myself to my room to get away from watching the attention he had received. Usually it didn’t bother me but with our birthday coming up, and the overwhelming dread that he would soon belong to someone else, I couldn’t bear to sit and watch it any longer. I sighed to myself, standing in front of my bathroom mirror as I pulled my mousy brown hair into a high ponytail. I took one look at myself in the mirror and saw that the tirednes I felt was showing in my eyes. It was getting late now and me and Mason had agreed to train together in the morning but my wolf was noticeably getting agitated. I knew she was screaming to be let out and I didn’t think I could suppress her any longer. Exiting the bathroom, I looked around for my backpack. “It’s got to be around here somewhere, I know I had it - ah there it is”. My brain was going into overdrive now. I’d been battling Sloane for over an hour and she was getting frustrated with being kept in. “Run, run !” she repeated as I proceeded towards my bedroom door. “Come on Sloane, give me a break I’m going as fast as I can” I tried to reason with her. She was now pushing closer to the surface, she was testing me and I was not appreciating it. Closing my bedroom door behind me, I rushed through the pack house knowing I didn’t have long before she pushed forward to shift.
Mason
“Mason?” I turned around to see Roman standing behind me. “What’s up?” I asked as he approached me. Roman was my best friend, and would soon be my beta once I took my position as alpha. I could see he was worried about something and I knew I didn’t need to ask why. “She’s done it again hasn’t she?” I asked although I meant this as more of a statement than a question. I knew something had been wrong with Esme today, especially at dinner when she barely glanced up from her plate which was untouched. Ah Esme - she was perfect in every way. I only wish she knew it herself. But of course, she didn’t notice how infatuated half of the pack was with her: I knew when our birthday came around that everyone would be lining up to see if they had the fate of becoming her mate - myself included if I was being honest with myself. Esme has been a part of my life as long as I could remember, we had been brought up side by side with our mothers being inseparable since they mated with our fathers. All I ever wanted to do was protect her, but it seemed she was always looking for a way to test that. Roman nodded and without a second thought I was walking out of the pack house. I wish she would stop going into the woods so late, I wasn’t alpha yet and wasn’t yet strong enough to protect her from everything lurking out there. I stopped as I neared the edge of the woods and spotted her backpack with her clothes tumbling out. “E where are you?” I linked hoping she would answer me. “Just got in bed - everything okay?” She responded. Did she just lie to me? Something was definitely wrong, we never lied to each other. “I know you’re lying! I’m coming to find you” I responded as I started to remove my clothes. “There’s no need I’m just going for a run Sloane was itching to get out - please go to bed.” I chuckled to myself at her response. Surely she didn’t believe that I was just going to let her run about the woods freely at this time of night given the threats we had received recently. I ignored her protests, as I shifted and headed into the woods.
