Mason
“Mason it’s time to wake up and train!” I groaned as I was woken by Esme. I shut my eyes again hoping she would leave me be after I had ignored her link but to my dismay she was banging on my bedroom door no more than 5 minutes later. “Mason come ooonnn” she moaned continuing to pound on the door. “I’m not going anywhere so you better get your butt out of bed before I come drag it out” her voice came through the door again. God she was resilient I’ll give her that. I pulled myself up, grabbing my discarded shirt I had left on the floor the night before. “Ma-“ “I’m coming now Jesus Esme” I cut her off before she had a chance to continue complaining. She had the cheek to come to my room demanding I wake at the crack of dawn when she had kept me out so late last night. She had continued to try and dodge my attempts at finding her last night until I eventually found her at the edge of our pack territory. I had scolded her for getting so close to the white claw territory and she had begrudgingly agreed to follow me back to the pack house. After I agreed to a run that was. Both of our wolves are very competitive, especially with each other so we spent the better part of an hour racing the entire territory both of us trying to outshine the other. Of course as strong and fast Esme was, I was the future alpha and she stood no chance against me. I opened the door to find Esme stood there pouting at me. Oh goddess - the way she did that always affected me in a way I couldn’t explain, it was like a million butterflies filled my stomach all at once. I swear if she isn’t my mate I don’t know what I’d do. “You ready to go?” I asked, stepping out of my room. “Duh, I’ve only been ready for like an hour” she retorted. God she had an attitude on her this morning and I’d be lying if I said it didn’t make me laugh. “So, what’s on the agenda for today?” I asked, trying to lighten the mood. “Number one - kick your butt, number two- humiliate you and last but not least number three - defeat you” she proclaimed, starting to walk with a skip in her step. I had to admit, she was very cute as her mood was slowly uplifting at the thought of defeating me. Unfortunately for her, I had no plans to go easy on her.

Training had taken longer than usual, and had lasted almost three hours. I could tell Esme had some extra steam to let off for some reason and I was more than happy to oblige if it helped her. I approached Roman who was sat where we had arranged to meet. “Alright you going to tell me what is so important you couldn’t wait until I had spoken with Delilah?” He asked as I reached the desk. Roman was lucky to have a mate like Delilah, whom he had met just a month ago after waiting a year to meet her. We had always been close despite the year age gap between us. She had come to help us with a problem we were having with some other members of her pack, and as fate had it Roman was taking over the meeting for me that day. Although we were not yet alpha and beta, our fathers had been preparing us for the last six months by letting us deal with matters whilst they stayed on the sidelines unless they deemed it fit to take over. “I’m glad that you asked” I grinned at my clearly annoyed friend. “So it’s 5 days until me and Esme turn 18 and I just know she’s going to be my mate, at least I hope … so do you think you could help me plan something special for her? I want to do it after we find out for sure.” I looked up to Roman frowning at me, which was definitely not the reaction I expected. He stayed silent clearly not wanting to say what he was thinking. “Roman come on man say it!” I demanded, eager to know why he was clearly not willing to help me with this. “Look Mason, I just don’t think it’s a good idea” he responded. I could see he was battling within himself and I knew that I was not going to like his reasons. “And why the f**k not?” I asked, starting to get agitated. He was the last person I expected to get this reaction from, he had always supported me and Esme. “I know you’re pretty set that she’s your mate but have you stopped to consider the facts? You’ve been friends forever and not once have you guys spoken about the possibility of being more than friends. Now I’m not saying she doesn’t feel the same way and I also know that, regardless of how she feels now, the mate bond would completely change that but I just think you need to pace yourself. What if she isn’t your mate?”. It was like he had set off a bomb that had been on the edge of exploding for a long time. I stood staring at Roman, struggling to keep my mouth closed. As shocked as I was at what he was saying, I couldn’t deny there was truth to it. After all what if Esme found her mate on Saturday and I didn’t? It would break me enough, let alone if I planned some big surprise just to find out she mated with someone else. “I hate to admit it - but you’re right” I begrudgingly agreed with Roman. “Look, I’m sorry but I just don’t want you to get your hopes up and get hurt. Now if you don’t mind - my mate is calling for me and she’s getting impatient” he said and with that he was walking away. I hated it when Roman was right but recently he was starting to be my voice of reason. I looked at the time and let out a groan. I was meant to be at that stupid meeting 10 minutes ago to plan for mine and Esme’s party, but now I wasn’t really feeling up to it. Eugh, I can’t bail and I knew it. I willed myself to move and headed towards my mother's office.
Esme
After training this morning, I had been recruited by my mother to speak with Theo. Recently he had been hard work, and it was starting to take its toll on her. It wasn’t that my brother was a bad kid, he really wasn’t but ever since our father had been murdered 3 years ago he just hadn’t been the same. He would get into fights at school, challenge other pack members his age, sneak out and mum couldn’t stop it. So I was brought in as a reinforcement. “Come on Theo, can’t you see what this is doing to mum, you need to stop” I yelled. We had been at it for what seemed like forever and I had lost all patience. He looked at me for a brief second, shrugged his shoulders and made his way to the door. “We are not done!” I screamed, perhaps louder than I intended to. Theo grabbed the door and turned to face me. “Try all you want, you are not him! You’re not dad so stop acting like it!”. I didn’t have a chance to respond before he slammed the door in my face, and then I heard him proceed to slam the front door. My brother was not much younger than me at 16, and we used to have such a strong bond. Since dad died, he’s been angry all the time - angry at the world and angry at the people who took him from us. Mum walked into the room looking defeated, but soon plastered a fake smile on her face. “Right my love, let’s get to this party meeting before any more drama kicks off!” she joked, tugging at my arm for me to leave the room. Great, party planning, I think I would rather be arguing with Theo.

Alpha and Luna Blakesley were already sat in the Lunas office waiting when we arrived. “Esme, Lily! Who’s ready to plan a party?” Luna Calliope asked. She looked so excited, and I knew that I would have to do my best to play along. Calliope Blakesley has a knack for party planning, she always threw the best events and it was definitely one of her favourite things to do. She turned towards me as she pulled me into a tight embrace. Calliope had been like a second mother to me, with her and my mum being tied at the hip she had brought me up as much as my own parents had. The same went for alpha James. They had been a real rock to our family when my father passed, with Calliope staying by my mothers side and alpha James trying his best to fill the void our father left behind. As we sat down I realised someone was missing. “Mason where are you? Do not make me sit through this alone!” I linked him. Trust Mason to be late to this, and leave me alone with our parents. “On my way I’ll be there in three… two … and” the office door opened and in strode Mason with a big grin on his face. “One. You didn’t miss me too much did you E?” He asked as he sat next to me. I could see he was in a cocky mood today. “Mason, nice of you to grace us with your presence” his father exclaimed, facing towards his son. “Alright dad” he responded winking. “Right now that we’re all here - let’s talk party! Lily can you believe our pups are only days away from possibly finding their mates!” Calliope screeched, bursting with excitement. But one thing was bothering me. She said mates - which meant she didn’t think Mason would be mine nor that I would be his. The thought etched at my heart a little, as the thought of Mason meeting a mate that wasn’t me crossed my mind. Oh god, what if he met his mate and I was unable to find mine? How would I feel then? My train of thought was broken by the sound of Masons voice. “Yes and a circus and hmm maybe fireworks ooh and” “Don’t you dare put any ideas into your mothers head. Low key remember? I don’t even want to do this thing” I cut him off before he could continue. He knew what he was doing, and I was not going to play the game. “Come on Esme lighten up!” He laughed as he spoke. “Lighten up are you joking me?! I told you nothing over the top! Either respect my wishes or I’m out” I snapped back, a litle harsher than I had intended. He started to frown and when I allowed myself to pay attention to my surroundings I realised we were receiving looks from all of our parents. “Fine you win but I still think the fireworks are a good idea” he responded, clearly sulking now. “You guys want to share what you are discussing” alpha James asked, with a small smile on his face. Of course he knew exactly the discussion we were having, everyone in the room did. The conversation began to flow again as ideas were tossed back and forth. “Right, I think that’s everything settled then” my mother said and as I turned to look at her I realised I had not paid her any attention the whole meeting and suddenly felt a pang of guilt. Luna Calliope now turned to face my mother and I saw the concern instantly spread across her face. “If we are done here, let’s all disperse. Uh - not you Lily” Calliope said. I knew exactly what was happening as I watched the color slowly draining from my mother's face. My mum had struggled ever since dad died, and his death had taken a toll. Without her mate, mum had grown weaker and with time she became tired easier. I got up knowing she would be okay with the Luna and turned to leave the room. “Treehouse?” Mason mind linked me. “Please” I begged and before I knew it his arm was around me guiding me down the stairs.
