THEY KNOW

Hudson Patrol so far today had been pretty boring, it always was in the daytime. So far me and Miles had seen a squirrel and that was about the only contact we had with anything living today apart from each other. “Man I hate day patrol” Miles moaned as he bit down into his sandwich. “Someone’s got to do it I guess” I muttered, however I felt exactly the same. It was unusual for me to be on day patrol due to my status, I was usually needed on night patrol when attacks were most likely. Today however I had offered to take over for one of the guys who needed to go out of town for the day. Maybe I’d tag along for night patrol today as well, it’s not like I have anything better to do with my time. If I give myself a couple of hours to sleep I’ll probably be good to go. “It’s good to see you man. You, Mason and Roman are always stuck in meetings with the alpha ceremony coming up. How does it feel to know soon you’ll be third in charge?” He asked. He was right, things have been absolutely crazy recently and Mason isn’t even alpha yet. Once he is, I can only imagine it would start to get even worse. “I know, it’s been a while. When you can pull yourself away from that mate of yours we should have a drink!” I replied, avoiding his question. The truth was I didn’t really want the title, I just wanted to live my life. I hoped that as time went on it got easier and I adjusted to it. It’s not like I had much of a choice, it was a part of my bloodline and I had to carry it on. “Oh come on you’re making out like I’m whipped!” Miles laughed as he grabbed his bag from behind a nearby tree. “No you’re right you’re not whipped. Whatever you are, it’s far more than that” I joked as his face fell. “That’s ridiculous!” He sulked at me, a small pout on his lips like a child. “Oh really so if you’re not on patrol what do you do apart from spend all of your time with Rosie?” I asked, trying to prove my point. “I, well, I do lots of things” he stuttered, his face turning red as he realised that I was right. “Yeah yeah alright” I laughed at his expense. “What’s the time anyway?” I asked, realising that I hadn’t checked for a while. “It’s just gone two” he informed me as he checked his phone. Time was really going slow today. “Well only three more hours to go I guess” I sighed, knowing that these next three hours would likely feel like forever. My attention was caught by some rustling coming from some nearby bushes. “Miles shift, NOW!” I demanded as I spotted them. Rogues. “We need some help to the east, it’s urgent! We’ve got at least ten rogues here” i mind linked the rest of the men on patrol, just in time as a huge brown wolf came crashing down on top of me. If everyone hurried up and got here, we could probably have this handled pretty quickly. I closed my mouth around his neck and managed to flip him off of me. As I gained power over him and towered over him, I lunged, sinking my teeth into his neck and ripped his head clean off. I couldn’t stop myself, I had become completely enraged and continued shredding his body apart until it was in pieces. I had been completely oblivious to what was happening around me, and when I turned towards the commotion behind me I realised we now had eight men here including myself and Miles. There was no way 9 rogues could overpower 8 of our men, we had this in the bag. I smashed into a scraggly grey wolf gunning for one of my men and he flew into a tree, the sound of his bones crushing on the impact. I threw myself on top of him, making sure I finished him off. I bit into his neck, tearing a chunk of it out as his blood spilled everywhere. As I went to tear into him again, I was hit by a sharp pain followed by the sensation of warm liquid trickling down my back. I turned to try and fight the rogue off when Miles came flying into him, forcing the wolf to crash to the ground. I froze to my spot as I watched the scene unfold in front of me. Two rogues pounced on top of Miles, giving the wolf he had attacked the chance to recover and join them. This wasn’t making any sense. There had only been ten rogues, where had the rest of them come from? There was at least 10 more to replace the ones we had already slaughtered. I forced myself to snap out if it and ran towards the rogues attacking Miles. I jumped on to the largest one of the three first knowing if I didn’t I would have less chance of gaining control. I sunk my teeth into his back causing him to squeal in pain. “A little help please” I linked the guys. If we didn’t get these wolves off of Miles soon he would be dead, he wouldn’t stand a chance. His fur was already matted in blood that I was certain was his own and he was barely fighting back anymore. Three of my men joined me and we quickly took out the three rogues, ripping each one apart piece by piece. I pulled myself away to take in my surroundings. There were bodies scattered everywhere, but there were no rogues left alive. I turned my attention back to Miles who was unconscious, his body in a pool of blood. “Get him to the infirmary now, Hurry!”I ordered, Miles barely breathing and his injuries looking very severe. He had shifted back to his human form and was covered in cuts and scrapes but the most concerning thing was the gash in his stomach. It ran the whole length of his stomach, and was accompanied by teeth marks and small chunks of skin missing from his legs. Three of the men shifted into their human form and made a run towards Miles before picking him up. “We’ve got him. You got everything handled?” Danny asked me, holding Miles’ torso and head. “Yeah I’ve got this, just get him to the infirmary” I replied, knowing that if they didn’t Miles might not make it. The three men started carrying Miles away as I heard a sound from behind me. I turned around to see a gremlin stood next to the trees just a few metres away. I let out a growl preparing myself to attack when he spoke. “No don’t !” He squealed, holding his arms up to shield himself. I stopped dead in my tracks at his words. He made no advance towards me so I shifted myself back into my human form so I could communicate with the creature. I had two of my men stood behind me, ready to attack if things went wrong. “Guys hold back a minute, let’s hear the thing out.” He gasped at my naked form as I stood in front of him. I nodded my head at him and grabbed my bag which was discarded on the floor nearby, pulling my trousers out and pulling them on. “What are you doing on our pack territory?” I spat at him, furious that he dared trespass. He quivered at my words, fear in his eyes. “I-I’m sorry about that” he apologised taking a step towards me. “You mean to tell me you’re working with those rogues?” I asked with concern. Why on earth would gremlins be working with rogues? It made no sense. “I can’t say. I shouldn’t even be here, he would kill me if he knew I was” he admitted as he looked me dead in the eye. “Who?” I demanded, confused as to who he could be talking about. “Beware. Trouble is coming your way, you need to prepare yourselves. You must protect her at all costs” he warned me taking a step back in retreat. “What trouble? Protect who?” I questioned even more confused now. Who could need protecting? The Luna? The future Luna? “I-I’ve said too much” he trembled turning away. The green creature turned back towards me. “Be careful” his last warning came before he ran off into the woods. What the f**k had just happened? I stood trying to comprehend what had just happened when it hit me. s**t I still hadn’t told Mason about anything that had happened. The thought hadn’t even occurred to me to inform him of the situation. “Mason, we need to talk” I linked him realising he would have my head if he didn’t hear it from me first. “Can it wait? I’m kind of busy” he snapped. Clearly I had caught him at a bad time but this could not wait. “No this cannot wait” I urged, needing him to listen to me. “What is it Hudson?” “We were just hit by a rogue attack. About 20 or so of them at least. We managed to get control of the situation but Miles - he’s been taken to the infirmary but it doesn’t look good” I told him, fear rising in me. I hadn’t let myself think about Miles, about how bad it really was. He couldn’t die, he just couldn’t. Miles had been my best friend since we were young pups, he’d been through everything with me. “In broad daylight? What the f**k!” Masons voice came booming in my head. The same thought had occurred to me. These rogues clearly had no fear if they were attacking during the day time now. It didn’t sit right with me. “I know, something seems off here. They never attack in the day but these rogues, they had no fear. They’re getting stronger, it was a struggle for us to gain control of the situation” I admitted. I was actually surprised that we had managed to only have one casualty in the attack, if there had been only a couple more we might not have been so lucky. “s**t okay, I’ll send some more patrols out and let my father know in case it hasn’t already been passed onto him” he told me. That wasn’t even the half of it. “Mason, there’s something else.” Mason “Gremlins? What the f**k are gremlins doing in our territory?” I yelled at Hudson who was stood in my fathers office. Me and my father had rushed here when he had told me we needed to talk. “Are you sure Hudson?” My father asked, seeming doubtful. “Yes I’m sure. It spoke to me, it was afraid but it seemed to pose no threat” he spoke to me and my father. Hudson was a state, his face was covered in cuts and bruises while his arm was practically one big claw mark. “Well, what did it say?” I demanded an answer. None of this made any sense. First rogues attacking during broad daylight, then a gremlin has the balls to come on my territory and speak to one of my men. “Well firstly I don’t think it’s really a rogue problem we’re having. I don’t know what it is but someone’s behind this all and the gremlins are working with them” he said, taking in a deep breath. “That’s not everything. He said that something bad is coming our way and we need to prepare ourselves. I don’t know what that is but I don’t think we should take things lightly.” What did he mean something bad was coming our way? How could I possibly prepare for something if I didn’t know what it was? “What did he mean by something bad?” I asked, irritated at the vagueness of his information. It wasn’t exactly the best to go on. “It didn’t say. I tried to get more information but all he said was that he couldn’t say anymore. He said he would kill him if he knew he was here.” “What do you mean he?” My father asked, pacing the room. I knew how anxious he must be about all of this. He was about to hand his precious pack over to me but with all of this how would I handle that? It was going to be hard enough taking on the new responsibilities, let alone being under constant threat. “I-I don’t know” Hudson stuttered, clearly feeling the pressure of being questioned by my father. I was distracted when I saw Roman out of the corner of my eye through the window walking towards his car. “Excuse me for a moment” I said to my father as I made my way out the door. Roman needed to be involved in this. “Roman” I called as I reached the door. “My fathers office now!” I demanded, making sure to make it known this wasn’t an option. He shoved his keys into his pocket and bounced up the steps to the pack house. “What’s going on?” He asked, concern clear in his voice. “I can’t say until we’re in the office, we can’t have anyone hearing this” I told him as we walked towards my fathers office. I pushed open the door, holding it so that Roman could enter behind me. I saw the confusion on his face as he caught sight of Hudson and my father stood in silence. “Right can someone tell me what’s going on?” He questioned, taking a seat in the corner of the room. “Hudson take it away” I said, gesturing my hand towards him. “We had another rogue attack, about an hour ago. One casualty, Miles” he informed Roman, holding eye contact with him. “s**t Miles? Is he going to be okay?” Roman stood, as the panic set in. I knew Roman and Miles were close and this would hit him hard. “I don’t know Roman. It didn’t look good to be honest” he admitted, his gaze dropping to the ground. I let my mind drift to Blaire as Hudson continued filling Roman in on what had happened. How was I going to protect her from all of this? I was scared for my mate, if we were under constant attack something could happen to her and she still wasn’t strong enough to defend herself if it came to it. I knew Esme was working with her every day but we didn’t have time on our side. If things carried on like this, I didn’t know how long it would be until we were under an attack we couldn’t fight off. “Mason we’re going to have to add numbers to our patrols. Even daytime. We need to stay on top of this before we start losing men” my father instructed, bringing me out of my train of thought. “Of course” I responded, trying to work out in my head who I needed to speak to. “Guys I hate to say it, but there’s more” Hudson interrupted us. “What do you mean more?” I snapped at him, sounding harsher than I meant to. How could there be more? Wasn’t all of this enough? “He said we need to protect her. And before you ask, I don’t know who they mean” he added before he could be questioned any further. Poor guy, he’s being completely bombarded and none of this was his fault. “They know” my fathers voice trembled, causing all of us to look in his direction.
