The Deep Terminal

307 Words
Navigating deeper into the root system of the mountain, the air grew increasingly stale and warm, tainted by the faint, acrid scent of burning oil and sulfur. The smooth limestone walls gradually gave way to reinforced iron bulkheads and heavy timber bracing—clear signs that the Bloodmoon Syndicate had converted a natural subterranean pocket into a major logistics hub. Peering through a narrow ventilation slit high up on the cavern wall, Aeloria, Velan, and Kaelen looked down upon a bustling underground staging area. Dozens of syndicate operatives in heavy armor were hauling crates, checking mechanized drill rigs, and organizing weapons caches beneath flickering torches. In the center of the operation stood a massive iron-reinforced door leading deeper into the primary mountain vault. "That's the main terminal gate," Aeloria whispered, her breath brushing against Velan's jawline as they shared the tight vantage point. "If they breach that vault, they gain direct access to the subterranean aquifer that feeds the entire citadel." Velan’s jaw clenched, a low growl rumbling in his throat at the audacity of the threat. His fingers tightened around the hilt of his broadsword. "We don't give them the chance." "We need a distraction," Kaelen suggested, readying his crossbow. "If I take out the main fuel line feeding their generator torches on the eastern wall, the resulting darkness and chaos will scatter their guards. We can use the confusion to strike the command officers directly." "Do it," Velan ordered. Moments later, a sharp thwack echoed through the chamber as Kaelen’s bolt pierced the high-pressure fuel line. A brilliant flash of fire erupted along the eastern wall, plunging half the subterranean terminal into chaotic darkness and sending the syndicate guards scrambling in panic. "Now," Velan commanded, leaping down from the ledge with Aeloria right by his side, ready to plunge into the heart of the fray.
