Shadows on the Threshold

The sub-zero winds howled across the high battlements of the Obsidian Citadel, but inside the armory, the air was thick with the scent of hot oil, whetstones, and cold steel. Rows of heavy iron racks gleamed under the amber torchlight, laden with broadswords, cross-bows, and reinforced plate armor bearing the carved sigil of the roaring wolf moon. Aeloria stood before a heavy oak table, her fingers tracing the intricate silver filigree carved into the handle of a double-edged dagger. Beside her, Velan inspected a sheaf of encrypted intelligence reports intercepted from the western border passes. The shadows cast by the flickering wall sconces danced across his high cheekbones, sharpening the hard, unforgiving lines of his jaw. "The Bloodmoon Syndicate is moving faster than Kaelen’s outriders anticipated," Velan muttered, his deep voice vibrating through the quiet armory. He tossed the parchment onto the table, his dark eyes snapping up to lock onto hers. "They are testing our outer perimeters under the cover of the morning blizzard, probing for weak points in the basalt wall." "They aren't just testing us," Aeloria replied smoothly, lifting the dagger from the table and testing its balance with an effortless, practiced grace that spoke of a childhood spent among royal weapon masters. "They are looking for me. The moment word leaked that the Obsidian Alpha had taken a southern survivor as his mate, the syndicate realized that the secret of the Dawnwood m******e wasn't buried as deeply as they hoped." Velan stepped closer, his massive frame shutting out the rest of the room as he closed the distance between them. He reached out, his calloused thumb gently brushing against her knuckles. "Let them look. Let them scale every inch of this mountain. When they reach these gates, they won't find a frightened refugee hiding behind chemical suppressants. They will find an executioner." Before Aeloria could answer, the heavy oak doors of the armory slammed open. Kaelen strode inside, his breath pluming in the cold air, his dark leather armor scuffed with fresh mud and ice. "Alpha," Kaelen reported sharply, bowing his head before locking eyes with Velan. "The scouts report movement in the lower gorge. Three vanguard units from the Bloodmoon Syndicate have breached the outer valley. They are bypassing the standard trade routes and moving straight up the narrow ravine toward the northern gates." Velan’s eyes flashed a brilliant, luminous gold, the apex predator within him surging violently to the surface. "Mobilize the elite guard," the Alpha commanded, his voice ringing with absolute, terrifying authority. "Lock down the inner keep, and open the outer portcullis. Let them step right into the trap."
