The Council’s Decree

633 Words
The heavy oak doors of the central keep echoed off the basalt stone walls as Kaelen and a dozen high-ranking members of the Obsidian Pack’s inner circle rushed into the courtyard. The biting mountain wind whipped through the torches, casting long, erratic shadows across the frost-covered cobblestones. Kaelen halted abruptly, his boots sliding slightly on the ice, his eyes darting from Velan’s unyielding stance down to the slight, cloaked figure standing firmly beside him. Silence fell over the courtyard, heavy and suffocating. The surrounding guards held their breath, their hands resting cautiously on the hilts of their iron blades. An Alpha taking a human-looking mate from the borderlands was unprecedented; doing so without consulting the Council of Elders was considered an open challenge to the ancient laws of the northern packs. "Alpha Velan," a sharp, gravelly voice cut through the stillness. Eldrin, the eldest and most conservative member of the Council, stepped forward from the pack. His posture was rigid, his grey hair cropped short, and his weathered face etched with decades of hardline pack politics. His gaze swept over Aeloria with undisguised contempt, lingering on the ragged edge of her cloak and the dirt still clinging to her boots. "What is the meaning of this? You ride out into a routine border patrol and return with a human stray from the slums? The Obsidian Citadel is not a sanctuary for charity cases." Aeloria’s jaw tightened. A hot surge of fury flared in her chest, but before she could step forward and tear the elder apart with a tongue as sharp as a razor, Velan moved. The Alpha didn't draw a weapon, but the air pressure in the courtyard plummeted instantly. A low, bone-chilling growl vibrated deep within Velan’s chest, causing the war-horses in the nearby stables to whinny in sheer terror. His eyes flashed a blinding, terrifying gold as he glared down at the elder. "Watch your tongue, Eldrin," Velan commanded, his voice carrying the terrifying authority of an apex predator defending its core. "She is no human stray. She is my chosen mate. And the next person to speak to her with disrespect will find their tongue ripped out by their own roots." A collective gasp rippled through the assembled council members. Kaelen’s eyes widened in profound shock as the pieces finally clicked together in his mind—the sudden disruption in the southern perimeter, the unnatural strength, the scent of jasmine and burnt copper masked by years of ash and suppressants. Eldrin paled slightly under the lethal weight of the Alpha’s glare, but years of stubborn pride kept him standing his ground. "A mate bond must be sanctioned by the blood-moon ritual and verified by the elders! A true luna of the Obsidian Pack must possess pure northern blood, not the filth of the southern slums! How do we know she isn't a spy sent by the rival Bloodmoon Syndicate?" "Because," Aeloria spoke up, her voice slicing through the cold air with a melodic, razor-sharp resonance that commanded absolute attention. She threw back the deep hood of her cloak, letting her dark hair spill over her shoulders. Her silver-flecked eyes locked onto Eldrin with an intensity that made the old elder instinctively take a half-step back. The suppressants were entirely gone, and the natural, overwhelming aura of royal dominance radiated from her small frame like a physical shockwave. "Because a spy wouldn't have broken Garreth’s wrist with a flick of her wrist, and she certainly wouldn't have survived ten years of chemical poison just to keep your precious northern borders from burning," Aeloria finished smoothly, stepping forward into the torchlight. Velan looked down at her, a fierce, dark grin of absolute pride flashing across his face. The game had only just begun, and the queen had finally claimed her throne.
