The Inner Sanctum

568 Words
The interior of the Obsidian Citadel’s inner keep was a stark contrast to the cold, brutalist stone of the outer fortifications. Massive tapestries depicting ancient wolf wars hung from the towering vaulted ceilings, and great iron hearths blazed with roaring fires that cast long, golden dances across polished marble floors. Yet, despite the luxury, the air inside was thick with history, shadows, and the suffocating weight of unyielding expectations. Velan led Aeloria up a grand spiral staircase carved directly from black granite, their boots echoing in rhythmic unison. He did not let go of her hand. His grip was firm, warm, and entirely inescapable—not out of cruelty, but out of an instinctive, primal need to anchor her to his side. "You handled Eldrin with admirable cruelty," Velan noted softly as they reached the heavy double doors of the Alpha’s private quarters. A pair of elite guards stationed outside snapped to attention, their fists over their hearts as their master approached. "Cruelty?" Aeloria pulled her hand free from his grip, turning to face him with a sharp, incredulous look as the heavy doors swung inward to reveal a vast, opulent chamber overlooking the snow-capped northern peaks. "I showed immense restraint. In the slums, a man who speaks to me with that level of insolence loses more than just his composure." Velan stepped into the chamber, turning back to look at her with a dark, appreciative smirk that reached his luminous eyes. "A true queen, then. I was worried the southern slums might have softened you, made you compliant." "Compliant?" Aeloria scoffed, walking over to the massive floor-to-ceiling windows that looked out over the endless expanse of the northern wilderness. The wind howled against the thick glass, but inside, the room was bathed in the warm, amber glow of the hearth. She turned back to face him, crossing her arms over her chest. "Velan, let’s clear the air. You dragged me out of a life I built, brought me across the border, and announced me to your council as your mate. But you know nothing about me. Not who my family was, not why I was forced into the slums, and certainly not why I spent ten years drinking poison to keep this quiet." The playful edge vanished from Velan’s expression. The air in the room grew suddenly heavy, charged with the crushing gravity of an Alpha confronting a vital truth. He closed the distance between them slowly, his heavy boots making no sound on the thick rugs. "I know enough," Velan spoke, his voice dropping into a low, resonant register that made her breath hitch. He stopped inches away, lifting a hand to gently trace the thin, silvery scar along her cheek—the exact mark left by a royal crest blade years ago. "I know that your bloodline traces back to the exiled southern royal house of Dawnwood. I know that someone tried to wipe your entire lineage off the map ten years ago. And I know..." He leaned down, his lips brushing against the shell of her ear as he finished in a harsh, possessive whisper, "...that the moment our bond locked into place, every enemy who ever hunted you just signed their own death warrant." Aeloria froze, her heart skipping a beat as the terrifying realization washed over her. He hadn't just found her by chance. He had known who she was all along.
