Shadows on the Perimeter

# The Alpha’s Unseen Mate ## By Eva Samson ## Chapter 3: Shadows on the Perimeter The muddy thoroughfares of the lower borderlands grew deathly quiet as the rhythmic rumble of approaching hooves reverberated through the damp earth. Market vendors hurriedly shuttered their wooden stalls, pulling terrified children inside and slamming heavy latches shut. In these lawless zones, strangers on horseback usually meant tax collectors, slave traders, or—worst of all—pack enforcers executing a purge. Aeloria pressed herself deep into the shadowed alcove of a crumbling stone granary, pulling her coarse, dark cloak tight around her frame. Her heart thundered against her ribs, but her mind remained razor-sharp, calculating every possible escape route. The herbal suppressants still lingered weakly in her blood, but the sudden proximity of high-ranking wolf energy was acting like a catalyst, stripping away the fog and sharpening her senses to an agonizing degree. She could hear them before she saw them. The heavy, controlled breathing of massive war-horses, the clink of high-grade steel armor, and beneath it all, the unmistakable, suffocating scent of pine, winter frost, and raw, absolute dominance. *Obsidian Pack elite,* she realized, a cold shiver running down her spine. Through a narrow gap in the wooden crates stacked before her, Aeloria watched the patrol enter the central square. There were six riders, their mounts sleek, powerful beasts bred for speed and war. They wore dark, obsidian-plated armor bearing the sigil of a roaring wolf moon. Leading them was a warrior whose sheer presence seemed to bend the very air around him—Kaelen, the pack’s chief tracker, his eyes scanning the alleys with predatory precision. "Spread out," Kaelen ordered, his voice carrying effortlessly across the silent plaza. "Check every hovel. The Alpha senses a disruption in the southern perimeter. Someone is masking their scent with suppression herbs. Find out who." Aeloria’s breath caught. *They are looking for me.* Panic clawed at her throat, but it was instantly stamped out by a fierce, defiant surge of adrenaline. She couldn't stay here. If they cornered her in this alley, the sheer volume of suppressants left in her system wouldn't be enough to hide the roaring power of her true bloodline once they forced a confrontation. Quietly as a ghost, she slipped out of the alcove into a narrow, mud-slicked drainage ditch that ran parallel to the back of the granary. Her movements were unnaturally fast, fueled by a surge of kinetic energy that defied her frail reputation. Just as she scrambled over a low stone wall leading toward the outer tree line, a deep, resonant growl echoed from the plaza behind her. "Wait," Kaelen’s voice snapped, sharp and sudden. The horse’s hooves shifted violently against the cobblestones as the tracker reined his mount around, his nose lifting into the damp air. He stared directly toward the wall Aeloria had just vaulted over. "By the Goddess... that scent." Aeloria didn't look back. She plunged headfirst into the dense, foggy thicket of the borderland forest, her boots pounding against the wet moss. The trees blurred past her in a rush of charcoal trunks and dripping leaves. Behind her, the sharp crashing of pursuit tore through the underbrush—the hounds of the Obsidian Pack had picked up her trail. Miles away, inside the war room of the northern citadel, Velan slammed his hand down onto the heavy oak map table. The wood splintered beneath his massive grip. His head snapped toward the southern window, his jaw clenching so hard a muscle ticked in his cheek. The bond had just flared—hot, terrified, and undeniably close. "Run if you must, little phantom," Velan growled to the empty room, his eyes blazing a terrifying, luminous gold as he strode toward the doors. "You belong to the night. And the night always claims its own."
