Chapter Fourteen
The ride to the office was the usual twenty minutes but it felt like three minutes to Amaya.
Arriving at the office, the entrance was packed with reporters seemingly waiting to catch a glimpse of Ezekiel
She passed through easily possibly because they didn't know who she was.
She walked further inside
"Good day Mrs Moretti."
A voice sounded by her left.
"I'm Jessica Bennett your husband's personal assistant."
Husband that word struck her hard.
"Hi. Can you please take me to my husband?"
"Sure this way please."
She expected the walk to lead he to his office but instead she was led to a completely different room with a heavy door.
Ezekiel stood by a mahogany table in his full glory.
"Hi dear."
Amaya called with a little too much sweetness in the word, catching Ezekiel totally off guard.
"Hi how are you feeling."
"Nervous."
She said as she placed her hands on his chest.
"What are you doing?"
"Being your fiancee."
"It's fine. This is Jessica she knows about the contract so you can be quite free around her."
"Oh."
As soon as the words left her mouth she dropped her hands off his shoulder like she was repulsed.
Jessica smiled at the two of them.
"I don't think we'd have to make any changes to her outfit she looks good."
"Thanks."
Amaya smiled shyly making Ezekiel furrow his brows, whilst looking at her.
"Before we go in there let me remind you some things not to do "
"Don't mention the contract to them."
Amaya cut him off.
"Yes and make sure the relationship looks real, do not spew unnecessary details."
"Basically do not ruin your extremely expensive reputation."
"Exactly."
Now it was Amaya's turn to scrunch up her face.
"Don't do that with your face."
"What?"
"This thing where the caption of whatever you're feeling is written on your face "
Amaya laughed quite loudly.
"Don't say that."
"Well now your mood is more lifted."
Amaya just smiled.
"Let's get going."
As soon as the doors were pushed camera flashes went off on her face, rooting her to the spot.
Ezekiel's hand on her lower back seemed to draw her out of her reverie.
"Smile."
His whisper in her ears had her flashing her sweetest smile.
No sooner had they settled in their seat did questions start coming in.
"Mr Moretti why did you ask to see the reporters today?"
"Good day to you too."
That seemed to shut the hall up for a second.
The reporter that asked the question smiled clumsily then greeted before repeating the question.
"I want to introduce my fiancee to you all."
The room uprooted in deafening noise of their murmurs.
The camera flash went crazy again.
Amaya was shocked on the inside but couldn't show that so she was smiling instead.
"We'd be getting married this Saturday."
That seemed to invoke another roar.
"In the next four days we'd be holding the wedding."
The reporters noise continued for a while before they shut the hell up.
Different questions came rushing in at the same time from all of them.
Ezekiel sat silently looking at them.
After all the questions stoped he continued.
"I'll try my best to answer all the questions you guys have so please let's be civilized and stop being loud."
That seemed to keep them all in their best behavior because the questions that followed came much more calmly.
"What's your fiancee's name?"
A middle aged reporter asked.
Amaya moved close to the mic seeming to answer.
"Hi my name is Amaya Rossi."
She said but the silence she was met with made her think she did something stupid so she looked at Ezekiel and he nodded his head a little.
"How did you guys meet?"
Ezekiel answered this time around.
"We met at a charity event."
He said looking at her.
Camera flashed again.
"Why did you guys hide the engagement."
"Have i always been known as someone who goes public?"
Ezekiel answered again.
"When did you guys get engaged?"
Amaya answered this time.
"A few weeks back."
"Why the sudden marriage?"
This question stunned both Amaya and Ezekiel.
Staring at each other, Ezekiel answered
"The way she makes me smile is something I want to experience for the rest of my life."
Camera flashes went off once more.
"Why has Amaya never been seen publicly with you?"
"Truth is we're alike and don't make everything public."
Amaya smiled while answering.
"Mrs. Moretti, some people have suggested this marriage is more strategic than romantic. What would you say to them?"
That question made Amaya freeze.
Because technically they are right.
She looked at Ezekiel, he was also staring back at her.
"I think this is where we'd end this meeting you guys have successfully made my wife sad."
Ezekiel said standing up.
Grabbing Amaya's hand, he led her outside.
The reporter went wild again with their snapping and its flashes.
Once they're away from everyone, Amaya finally cracks.
Her breathing becomes rapid, her hands shake, and she can't catch her breath.
Ezekiel initially thinks she's sick.
"Amaya?"
She couldn't answer.
Her fingers trembled violently as she tried to draw in another breath.
Ezekiel's expression changed.
"Hey."
He stepped closer but didn't touch her immediately.
"Look at me."
Her eyes struggled to find his.
"Hey hey breathe."
She didn't seem to be improving so he led her to a quiet place and asked everyone to leave them.
She struggled to focus.
"You're safe. Nobody is coming in here, Take your time."
She started catching her breath.
"I ruined it."
"No."
"I almost—"
Her eyes started to water.
"You didn't."
He paused.
"That's what matters."
Amaya felt calm, she didn't know whether it was because the interview was over or because of the way Ezekiel had stayed beside her without making her feel embarrassed.
For the first time since the cameras had started flashing, she felt safe.
But somewhere else in the city, someone was watching the same news.
Carter stared at the screen.
Amaya Rossi.
Ezekiel Moretti's fiancee.
His expression hardened.
He had seen enough.
This was not over.
