Dangerous game --- Chapter Four — Dangerous Game (Extended & Polished) The next morning, the mansion felt colder somehow. Maybe it was just me, replaying Xavier’s voice in my head—the way he’d said, “You don’t get to play games with me.” He didn’t like games? Funny, because I liked watching him squirm. I liked the possessive edge in his voice when he couldn’t control me. I wanted to laugh—the nerve of him. But the truth was, I couldn’t stop thinking about it. About him. About the way his eyes had darkened the moment I walked into the room last night in that dress. I tried to keep my distance today. I really did. But fate didn’t care what I wanted. --- Breakfast was unusually quiet. The long wooden table stretched between us, but the air was tight—thick with unspoken things. Tension clung to the walls like smoke, crackling between glances. I reached for my coffee just as the doorbell rang, sharp and sudden. A moment later, a man walked in—confident, composed, and magnetic. The kind of presence that made people turn before they even realized why. My stepfather rose to greet him. “Julian,” he said warmly. “An old friend. He’ll be staying the weekend.” Julian’s eyes found mine immediately. “You’re the new girl, right?” His voice was smooth, rich, with a hint of playful danger. “I’m Julian.” He smiled, and somehow the whole room softened around him. He looked at me like I was the only person there. I returned a polite smile, but I felt it—Xavier’s gaze slicing through me from across the table. Sharp. Possessive. A silent warning. “You look stunning today,” Julian added casually. Xavier’s jaw clenched. His fingers curled tightly around the edge of the table. Every time Julian looked my way, Xavier’s body tensed like a fuse waiting to ignite. And I… I couldn’t help myself. I leaned back, letting my hair tumble over my shoulder, and turned—slowly—locking eyes with Xavier. He didn’t blink. His gaze darkened. I saw it—anger, jealousy… or something even more dangerous, something deeper. --- Later that afternoon, I was walking down the hallway when Xavier suddenly stepped in front of me. Before I could react, I was pinned to the wall—his arm braced beside my head, his body just close enough to heat the space between us. His breath hit my skin, warm and unsteady. “Careful,” he growled, voice low and rough in my ear. “Flirting with him won’t get you anywhere. It'll only get you in trouble.” I raised an eyebrow, heartbeat quickening. “Are you… jealous?” A flicker passed through his eyes—too quick to name—but it was there. Then he smirked. That wicked, unreadable smile of his. Half amused, half threatening. “Don’t mistake interest for weakness,” he said. The words hit harder than I expected. I felt them like a challenge. So I leaned in, just enough for my lips to almost brush his ear, and whispered, “Neither should you.” For a moment, he didn’t move. Our eyes held—hot, fierce, unrelenting. The silence between us was deafening. And then, just like that, he turned and walked away. Sharp. Cold. Leaving me breathless. And craving more. --- This game was dangerous. And I was already hooked.
