Gavin choked on his food, “Marry you?” He could not believe what he just heard. It felt like he was on a prank show right now. “This can’t be real, right?” He asked the very calm and composed Veronica.
“It’s true.” She said and took a bite of her food again.
“I’m sorry, but let’s stop it right now. I am engaged to Sofia. There is no way I am going to marry you.” Gavin said it loud and clear to Veronica. But she did not seem affected by his response. It is as if she predicted his every move like before.
“Well, before you decide on that; I want you to get the complete picture first. I assure you this marriage will be mutually beneficial.” Veronica said and drank her water to clear her throat.
“Okay, explain.” Gavin gave Veronica the time to make sense of her proposal even if though he is sure that he won't change his mind.
“First of; I am not good at explanations, so bear with me.” Veronica warned Gavin. “You know Lucia, right?” She confirmed it to Gavin before laying out the details.
“Lucia, the business coach.” Gavin remembered how Lucia admitted that young and rich brats mostly hired her. Veronica does not suit that bill, but so does he, so it was fair to assume that she hired her too.
Veronica nodded. “Well, I hired her a while back.” she admitted to Gavin.
It surprised Gavin that he got it right. He looked at Veronica and she smiled at him. “So you guessed it right?” She asked him.
“You know, you are really messing with my mind right now?” Gavin admitted how Veronica successfully did it again.
“What you just did, that is what we call abductive reasoning. I can say you have potential.” Veronica said it like she read Gavin's mind earlier.
“How do you even know, that I thought of that earlier?” Gavin provoked Veronica for more answers.
Veronica showed a big grin on her face. “Look, we know Lucia as the business coach for rich brats. I mean that is her actual business tagline. So you wondered how I knew her. You know I am already a successful, I basically don’t need her help. But then again, you don’t fit that definition too. Now you assume; that I hired her, anyway.”
Gavin was blown away. Veronica got his thoughts exactly. “What? How? Why?” Those were the only words that came out of his mouth.
“Lucia told me stories about you. You are handsome, hot, smart, kind and the only male client that respected her and did not flirt with her. Unfortunately, you were also not educated in a regular school and that you are not financially capable.” Veronica did not filter her words.
“Okay, I get that now, but it still makes little sense why you are doing all these things.” Gavin feels like he is a part of Veronica’s experiment. There is no way that they bought those clothes just yesterday, and they were his size; even the shoes in there are all his size.
“I’ve been looking for someone like you. That’s why I hired Lucia. I initially thought that a brat billionaire would be an easier choice for me. But come to think of it, I need someone who will not take advantage of me and has a logical goal in his life.” Veronica stared at Gavin like she was dissecting his very being.
“So, what you are saying is... You want to hire me as your husband?” Gavin wanted his situation to be clear to Veronica.
Veronica sipped her coffee and smirked at Gavin. “See what I mean? Lucia is right, you are a fast learner. Yes, I want to hire you. But I already know that you won’t accept money, so my deal for you; I’ll teach you my trade. You will become a billionaire on your own.” She said it like it was easy to earn a billion.
Gavin could not begin how to wrap everything around his head. “So, what is in there for you?” He finally asks Veronica a challenging question.
“My money, it means it will be safe with you. That is my last task for you, manage all my money when I die.” She blurted out in the open.
“You have your family to do that for you; anyway you are too young to die.” Gavin said without thinking thoroughly. Veronica chuckled after Gavin ranted. And there is when he finally gets it. “Wait, are you dying?”
Veronica nodded. “It isn’t public knowledge. Aside from me and my doctor, you are the third person who knows a bout it.” She made it clear to him that he better keep his mouth shut about her health condition.
Gavin thought about it and since, she was not even keen on informing her family and having them beside her whilst the supposed last days of her life. Perhaps leaving her money with them is not really an option for her..
"Sorry to hear that." Gavin lowered his head, thinking about it. Can he really turn down a dying person's last wish?
Veronica squeezed Gavin's hand. This is the first time they physically touched each other, but for some reason it did not feel weird for Gavin. He is an empathetic person, and he does not want Veronica to feel lonely and rejected at such times.
"You don't have to feel burdened. It's okay if you reject me completely. I 'm sure I would find another person who could help me. Anyway, my doctor said I still have six months at most." Veronica's voice cracked. This is the first time Gavin felt some emotion in her.
She took a deep sigh before she spoke again. "How about I give you time to think about it? I will start teaching you now and as we get along, you can try to figure out if I am worth the favor I am asking from you."
Veronica understands that the favor she is asking from Gavin is not easy; however, the fact that Gavin and Aya are still together is something that caught her off guard. From her deductive reasoning, for all the struggles of Gavin and Aya went through after their last meeting; they should have tried to move on with their lives already. She is yet to figure out if it is just a one way feeling for Gavin at this moment, but first she has to convince him that she is indeed worth the favor.
He fell silent. This decision is tormenting for Gavin. Aya is the woman she proposed to, but will he actually marry Veronica? Gavin just went from flat out rejecting even just the idea of Veronica's proposal into something he would actually reconsider.
