Revelations

Gavin glanced in Veronica’s direction. “I would like to get to know you more, before I make my decision.” Veronica agreed with Gavin's terms. “Fair enough. I will be transparent with you. I want you to see me through. I am flawed. I am far from perfect, but I will never force you to accept my proposal. I will just make you see why my proposal is logical and honestly it is the only solution to my current problem. “Veronica was confident that she will be able to convince Gavin. Gavin looked at Veronica with his eyes filled with understanding. Veronica saw it and she instantly spoke again. “One last thing; please don’t pity me. I may be dying but I want to be treated normally.” “I will try my best.” Gavin answered. But there are just too many things running through Gavin’s mind. He needs to clear one of the most important things. “Just to be clear; you are not in any way, in love with me, right?” Gavin bit his lip just as when he realized his statement sounded arrogant. Veronica laughed; “Darling, you are handsome and hotter than most men that I’ve met. But with the current situation of my health, I don’t think I have enough time to infuse romance in my already brief life.” Gavin nodded. “That is comforting to hear; at least it would be easier to explain to Aya.” He said as if he was on good speaking terms with Aya. “You know what puzzles me?” Veronica finally admits that she has something she cannot figure out. “That’s a first! What is it?” Gavin is eager to know the puzzle in Veronica’s thoughts. “You see, Lucia said to me that she tried to help you fix your relationship with Sofia, but she failed miserably.” Veronica put down her fork and rested her hand on the table to look at Gavin directly in the eyes. “I went to Hudson to talk to you face to face and eventually propose, too. But the day I went there, I saw you walking on the interstate in a terrible condition. At first I was not sure that it was you. But when we reached Hudson and saw many authorities at the border; it finally occurred to me that it was you because I saw Sofia there too. But when my driver turned the car around; you already were already picked up by the old truck.” Veronica explained it to Gavin.  It took Gavin by surprise that Veronica’s knowledge of him goes way back when he did not even know she existed. “Well, for the months that you were away from Sofia… I thought that by now, you two are not together anymore.” Veronica revealed to Gavin. Gavin understands that since he gave Veronica the chance, he should also be transparent with her. “Okay, to be honest. It was just yesterday that I confirmed that she was still waiting for me. I tried to communicate with her after that incident but her brother did not let me and I completely understood his reasons.” Veronica nodded, understanding now that Gavin and Sofia’s love was not as simple as she initially thought. “You can tell our situation to Sofia, provided that she keeps it as a secret, at least it is something I want to bring to my grave with me.” She said, implying that she was actually willing to work out the scenario with Gavin. They finally settled with that one part that Gavin was sensitive about. The two finished their breakfast, and they both walked towards the backyard patio through the huge sliding door of the dining hall. The backyard is vast. It could easily fit a football field. It has a lap pool, and a landscaped garden.  “It actually still feels surreal to me. You planned everything. I felt manipulated unknowingly agreeing to your set expectations.” Gavin said to Veronica. “This is a skill, that I learned, pushing circumstances towards my benefit.” Veronica said, without even thinking twice that she may be misconstrued. "So, this thing you are doing, it developed into a habit?" Gavin pointed out that outside business, she was still doing it.  Veronica breathes heavily. She has been striving hard on her own for years now and no other soul knows of the reason why she is like this right now. She just could not blurt out everything yet because it involves Aya. "Consider it as my survival instinct." Veronica paused as she said a white lie.  Gavin is not giving up on understanding Veronica's reasons. He wants to make sure he is helping out for a good a reason and not for excuses. "This thing that you are doing. What pushed you to do it?" He interrogated Veronica. "One at a time, darling. For now, let's just focus on helping you earn your first million." Veronica tried to delay the answer to Gavin's question. Gavin hissed, realizing what Veronica just did. "Earning my first million? So you are going to answer my question after ten years?" He sneered at her. "Ten years? That's too long. What if I tell you, that it is tomorrow?" She was confident with her answer.  Gavin's jaw dropped open. "Tomorrow?"  Veronica smirked, "Of course, you are a fast learner and I am a good teacher. Besides, you will become the most popular self mad billionaire in a month's time. I can't just tell the world that you are my fiance if you are just an average joe. Who would believe me?" She added. It made sense to Gavin, but billionaire in a month's time? That would be ambitious to say the least. Is it even possible? He blew out his cheeks, realizing he isn't even qualified to complain when Veronica is helping her out establish his name.  "I know, it is also the only way I could match up with Aya in the future." He said in a tone of frustration. Veronica laughed mirthlessly. It confused Gavin. Is his reason not valid to be laughed at? "Oh, sorry. I did not mean to laugh at you. But you see, I am a multi-billionaire and Aya and her family is just on the doorstep of being a billionaire. The moment I die, I will leave you a hundred for yourself and the rest. You will manage them as I've planned." Veronica explained herself to Gavin. "Does it make much difference?" it irritated Gavin on how Veronica is being specific about such a matter.  Veronica did not realize how innocent Gavin is about the world of the elite and how they basically sell their children just for money. "It does. Do you even realize that a billion seconds is equal to around thirty-two years? But a hundred billion seconds is equal to three thousand one hundred seventy-one years. That is how far those figures are. What I want you to realize is I know Sofia's family and when I die, her father will basically offer her daughter to you, that I'm sure of."
