Veronica looked at Gavin after hearing what he said. “You don’t have to. It’s not part of the agreement.” She mumbled under her breath. She obviously was wishing that Gavin would deny her resistance, too.
“Do you honestly think that I am staying with you because of the agreement?” Gavin asked Veronica. He wanted to be honest with himself. He cares for Veronica, beyond their initial agreement.
Veronica sat up straight and stared at Gavin with the scrutinizing gaze she always does. “Honestly? I don’t even want to know. What’s the use? I’m dying, anyway.” She grunted.
Gavin embraced her tighter and messed up Veronica’s hair. “Silly girl, you will not be this distraught right now if you did not consider doing it for real.”
Veronica finally let out a faint smile. “I hate it that you are getting better at your abductive reasoning.”
Gavin laughed at Veronica’s reaction. He stood up and took off his jacket. He placed it over Veronica’s shoulder and covered her head with the hoodie. Gavin extended his hand to Veronica.
“Let’s go home.” Gavin said with a smile on his face.
Veronica was thinking, if all the covering is necessary, nevertheless she let him do what he wanted. This is very much unlike her; to let anyone take the lead for her. All her life she defied people who told her what to do, and now she finds it weird to just let Gavin do this. She took his hand, and they ran towards his bike outside.
He placed a helmet over Veronica’s head. “Hold tight!” Gavin whispered to her.
Veronica held on to Gavin like her life depended on it. Her heart pounded hard. Her loneliness earlier was replaced with the excitement of not knowing what Gavin was thinking. It baffles her that Gavin can get away with his actions like this. “Am I letting myself go too much?” Veronica could not hide her fear of getting too close to Gavin. This isn’t like her; she is the Lone Wolfe and will remain the Lone Wolfe until she dies.
“Where are we going?” She asked Gavin in a very serious tone. She is hoping to take back the control over their current situation.
Gavin laughed at Veronica’s question. “That is a significant improvement, by the way.” He responded with a smile.
It confused Veronica again. “What the hell are you talking about right now?” She asked Gavin now with a slight annoyance.
“You asked me where we are going. Veronica, did you just hear yourself?” Gavin did not explain too much, he knows Veronica would get what he means.
Veronica kept mum. She finally understood what Gavin meant. Normally she would have asked him, “Where are you taking me?” because more often than not she would only be concerned about is herself and would always exclude others from the equation. Veronica did not want to explain further because she sure will lose this one.
She kept quiet until they reached the bay. There was a seawall, and a designated sitting area for tourists. Veronica lived in Victoria all her life, but this is the first time she went to this side of the city. The view of the bridge with the lights was a sight to behold.
“How did you even know this place?” Veronica asked Gavin. It amazed her that Gavin was able to find this place when he was the newbie in this area.
Gavin chuckled. “No, the real question is how come you did not even know this place existed?” He asked Veronica back.
Veronica shook her head. “I don’t go out a lot, you know that.” She tried to reason out.
“I know.” Gavin said in a low voice and nodded at Veronica. He inhaled deeply, filling his lungs with the fresh sea breeze. “It’s nice here.” He commented.
Veronica lifted her gaze towards the sky and appreciated the skyline of the city. She never thought there were spots like this to appreciate such mundane scenes looking so spectacular in a different perspective. “You don’t have to come with me.” She said, looking at Gavin.
Gavin focused his stare on Veronica. “But I would. You know that.” He got back at Veronica’s witty answer to him earlier.
“I know.” She responded, copying what he just answered earlier.
They both laughed at themselves. Veronica is not keen on how her relationship with Gavin is evolving. “I will die soon. You don’t have to show so much care for me. I don’t want you to get too invested into someone like me.” Veronica said in a serious voice. She can feel it in her heart that Gavin's feelings for her are growing.
Gavin rubbed his palms on his lap, feeling the rough texture of his jeans; as if he was trying to distract himself from the overwhelming emotion in Veronica’s answer. “We will all die, anyway. Why does it matter? For all you know, I might go before you.” He huffed, trying to sound tough.
“Don’t say that Gavin! you still have plans for yourself.” She protested and squinted her eyes at Gavin as if she was scolding her little brother.
“See what I mean?” Gavin gave a faint smile. He got the response he exactly aimed for.
Veronica let out a heavy sigh. “You are really getting good at these mind games.” She smiled at Gavin. Veronica’s eyes are getting watery and surprisingly she just let it all out.
Gavin felt that pain seeing her hopeless and crying. His tears freely flowed from his eyes and did not even bother hiding or wiping it off of his face. "We all have our destined endings, you know. And if it means that I can be with you during hard times, then I will gladly be there."
Veronica felt every word Gavin said. It isn't every day that you get to have someone like him beside you. And to be honest, never in her wildest dream did she ever thought that Gavin would turn out to be such a perfect guy. It's just a shame that their time together will be literally short lived.
"Hey, you are not answering me." Gavin nudged Veronica slightly on her shoulders. He wiped his tears and smiled as he made another comment. "You are not the Lone or the Lonely Wolfe anymore."
Veronica looked at him like she was waiting for the punch line. He winked at her and answered. "You are lovely, a Lovely Wolfe with a plus one."
