Fight or Flight

1246 Words
Gavin woke up from loud banging on his door. He instantly stood up in panic, as it sounded like an emergency. He opened the door, seeing Veronica ready to go. It took a while before Gavin realized that they should be going by this time. Veronica turned her back on Gavin, as he was only wearing his boxer briefs when he slept. She could not let Gavin see her face turn crimson for seeing him this way. “Oh, sh*t I overslept. Wait for me; I’ll be ready in five minutes.” He ran towards his bathroom to take a quick shower and change. Veronica entered Gavin’s room as soon as he entered his en suite. She knows that he does not have a luggage prepared for this trip. She did it on her own, invading Gavin’s private space just to get on time at the airport. This flight is important for Veronica because if she will not reach the hospital on time, they will push her tests to next month as this is the only available spot she got for this month. Gavin would be truly upset if the flight and tests would be moved because of him. Veronica knows Gavin this much at this point. Gavin brushed his teeth as he was under the shower, multi tasking to finish faster. If he did not drink last night, he would not reek of alcohol this bad. His head ache is not that awful, he just got knocked out. Gavin could not even remember how he got into his room, let alone stripped off in his boxer briefs, which he rarely does. “I really can’t handle wine.” He thought to himself as he finished his quick shower. When he stepped out of his bathroom, eyes widened, and his jaw dropped on the floor. “Veronica?” He blurted out as he walked towards his clothes. “Did Veronica do this?” He saw his luggage prepared already. He did not expect her to do such tasks for him. They are not in a genuine relationship and doing this for him feels a little too intimate for Gavin; because he was so used to doing everything on his own. He shook his head and hurriedly put his clothes on. Veronica was there in the living room, waiting for him. She looked lovely with her oversized white coat, while still looked sexy with her black tube top and high-waist, white satin pants. She cleanly swept her hair in a high ponytail. The big dark sunglasses she wore made her look more classy and mysterious at the same time. Veronica stood up and placed a black Givenchy cap on his head and handed him a Cartier gold tone metal sunglasses. Gavin inspected it; it looked like a weird pair of aviators. But he trusted Veronica’s taste on expensive things. Gavin knows very well that he needs to look the part in this relationship. He wore it and smiled at Veronica. “Shall we?” He asked her. She nodded, and Veronica’s driver dropped the two at the airport. As soon as they stepped down from the car, the paparazzi swarmed them. Gavin immediately understood why Veronica covered his face. She knew this would happen. The mysterious Lone Wolfe; the richest woman in the country is seen with a man for the first time. And like her, the man is equally mysterious and generally unknown.   Security personnel assisted them in the VIP lounge. Gavin expected them to board the plane with first-class tickets, but he never knew that such VIP lounge exists in airports. It basically looks like a posh hotel lobby. “Good afternoon passengers, this is the pre-boarding announcement for flight 143B bound to Clumberg. We are now inviting those passengers with small children and any passengers requiring special assistance and our First-class ticket holders to begin boarding at this time. Please have your boarding pass and identification ready. Regular boarding will begin in approximately ten minutes’ time. Thank you.” Gavin heard the pre-boarding announcement and stood up. He extended his hand to Veronica. He knows that as they exit this lounge, there are eyes that would on the lookout for them. They walked hand in hand towards the gate.  Veronica knows that it is just for show but she can't help but feel her heart flutter doing this with Gavin. They boarded the A380 plane, with the airline voted as the best in the world. Gavin was in awe when they reached the first-class area. But he did his best not to show his amazement. He is supposedly a billionaire that is not surprised with such luxury.  They basically have their own cabin. It has two luxury seats and a double bed in the center. There is even an ensuite for them. Gavin moved towards Veronica and whispered. "This one is above and beyond my expectations. Did we really have to book this one?"  Veronica laughed at Gavin's reaction. "The eighteen hour flight would seem like forever, I'm telling you." She reminded Gavin of their journey. "We don't want to be under everyone's scrutiny for that long."  Gavin nodded as the bed looked too tempting for him. Eighteen hour flight means he will have a lot of time to sleep. He patted his pockets and realized he left his phone. "Oh f*ck, I forgot my phone." Gavin muttered as he removed his cap.  "Oh, so you mean, you have not cleared this with Sofia yet?" Veronica was appalled by Gavin's actions. "How could you do that? Last night before we parted you said you will come clean to her because we both know that you will be in the news today." Veronica said to Gavin. He took a deep sigh. "I don't even remember going to my room last night." He admitted that he basically blacked out. "For real? Are you that wasted? I did not even notice." Veronica confessed that she did not bother confirming since he did not seem out of himself last night.  "I'm so f*cked right now. How can I explain this to her?" Gavin was lost for words. This is the first time that even Veronica does not have an answer for him. ***** Aya just came home from a day hike. While the villa renovation is ongoing, she decided to get back to herself and find solace in her new hobby. She picked up her phone to check for messages since she never checked her phone since yesterday. She was stunned to see a couple of missed calls and a long message from Ava.  "This is a long message from Ava. Wonder what's up with her." She said even before she read a single word from the long message. Aya took her cup of coffee and sat as she read the long message.  "I have a confession to make. I am working on myself to be worthy of you like how your family always told me. A beautiful woman helped me out, but it came at a price. I don't mind it at first because I know I have you in my heart. But what the heck. I care for her. You don't know how much my mind and heart are confused right now. A part of me wants to run back to you but a part of me also wants to be with her." Tears fell from her cheeks as she silently cried. "Gavin, he is Ava?"
