Sad Truth

1222 Words
“Why do you keep saying she was innocent?” Veronica asked Gavin who seemed too sure of himself. “Do you know that she did not refute the genuineness of that video?” Veronica added. She knows the details of the case when she heard her parents talked about it. “I’ve seen the video, and like you I thought it was her at first. I accepted her for what it is even if it were true." He sneered while he thought how foolish he was back then. "But now, I know better. I am sure it is not her.” Gavin reiterated to Veronica. “How come? I mean she even went to the police station to testify that it was true, and that statement ultimately set the man detained in connection to the video free.” Veronica said everything she knew about the case. She was wondering why Gavin still did not change the way he sees the case even with the dirty details she just said. “That is how much he loves her; unconditionally.” She thought to herself, realizing that if you love a person, the past does not matter much. Like how she feels about Gavin. Nurturing the feelings she has for him when she does not have a clue about his past.   “It makes sense; she had to make it appear like it was legit. She did that just to get away from your brother.” Gavin said with a smile. “You are that sure it is not her in the video, huh.” Veronica was really curious why Gavin trusts Sofia that much. He nodded. “I am one hundred percent sure.” Gavin did not elaborate further how he was sure of it, but he just wanted to be clear with Veronica that he knows what he was talking about. “You know what would not make sense?” He asked Veronica. Veronica’s eyebrows rose, snooping about Gavin’s deductions. “I think that Sofia will try to get back at me through your brother; even if she went through all that scandal just to get out of the relationship with him.” He scratched his stubbles on his chin as he thought of the possible move of Sofia. “And another weird thing is, you told me to get back with her then you would say that you actually believe that she was the one in the video. Why is that? Veronica chuckled. Somehow, women think alike. Gavin furrowed his forehead when he saw the look on Veronica’s face. “We women are weird, huh?” She blurted out. “I ran from home because when the marriage talks between Howie and Sofia fell apart, I was the next one in line. I worked really hard to prove to them that I don’t need a man to be successful and help them with the business. But now, look at us.” She pointed out the irony of having an arranged marriage with Gavin. Veronica tucked her hair behind her ear. “One more thing, I said that you should get back with Sofia because no matter her past is… It clearly does not change the fact that you love her. Isn’t that the most important thing?” She asked Gavin. “True enough, you women are weird and we men are weirder because no matter how weird you guys are we still keep coming back to you weirdoes.” They both laughed at the biggest irony of all; life. *** The following days, Veronica went through another series of tests. Gavin took care of her, as she felt dizzy and weak after some of the tests. Veronica was thankful that this time she had Gavin with her, unlike the first time she underwent these tests… She was alone and lonely. The days went by fast, but when the time to wait for the results came, the days felt too slow for them. The wait was too consuming that Veronica barely had enough appetite to eat. Gavin and Veronica stood on the veranda overlooking the small outdoor area of the hotel. They both stared at the starry night while nervously waiting for the email from her doctor. “Are you sure they should do this electronically? I mean at least we should talk to her in private.” Gavin urged Veronica for a fresh approach. “No, I don’t want that. If it is good news, then I can go back and meet her again. If it is not then, I just want to move on and not dwell on it.” Veronica established her stand. Gavin knows that this is a matter of acceptance for Veronica and he is not in the position to dictate it to her on how to accept it. It isn’t his call, and he is only here to help Veronica the way she wants to be helped. Gavin understands that this is a tough time in Veronica’s life and he is ready to be the one to make it feel lighter for her. Gavin wrapped his arms around Veronica’s shoulders and patted it. “Okay, whatever you wish, I’m just here for you.” Gavin said in a sincere tone. Veronica then rested her head on Gavin. This is the place she feels the safest, where she will not be judged and pressured. A few minutes later, the dreaded email arrived. Gavin led her to the outdoor seats near them. “Do you want me to read it for you?” Gavin asked Veronica. Veronica shook her head and smiled at Gavin. She wants to show him that she is strong enough to accept the truth. She exhaled heavily before she opened the e-mail. Her eyes widened as she read the results. She did not need to say anything, and Gavin knew exactly what it was. He embraced Veronica to try to comfort her. Tears finally fell off her face even though she tried her best to stop those tears from falling. They remained that way for a couple of minutes, both of them were silent. Gavin just made sure Veronica felt his warmth, that she was not alone during these trying times. He did not notice that tears also started cascading down his cheeks. Gavin never thought that he would experience such pain for someone he knew little about. But the genuine feelings and interactions they shared were more than enough for him to love Veronica like how he loves him now. A staunch friend, a family that is an integral part of your life; that is how he sees Veronica, “It’s okay, you can cry.” Gavin said to her in his sincere tone. Veronica nodded and wiped her tears. She knows that this grief should be short-lived because she barely has time to do all her plans now. The most important thing for her right now is to see her plans in motion before she rests for good. “We need to act fast. I don’t have much time left.” Veronica said. Gavin sat up properly and fixed himself. He cleared his throat before he spoke. “Sure, just tell me what I can do to help.” He volunteered for Veronica. “Let’s get married tomorrow.” Veronica muttered.
