Nothing quite matches the beauty and solitude of the Arizona desert. Riding Starlight Sky for the first time since my harrowing ordeal, I lifted my face skyward, treasuring the glorious sensation of being alive to enjoy the feel of warm sunlight and the gentle breeze caressing my cheeks. I rejoiced at the wide arc of sapphire sky festooned with cottony, white clouds and the dazzling display of spring wildflowers blanketing the rocky hillsides. Ever since my confinement in the dark crypt and claustrophobic cave passages, I appreciated everything I saw, touched, smelled and tasted. All of it nourished my battered soul, reminding me of those I loved and how precious life was.
