“I’m all ears,” I answered, trying to muster up a modicum of enthusiasm.
“You remember me telling you about my friend, Jane, who works with the Historic Preservation Office in Phoenix?”

“Well, she and several other volunteers have been going through some of the original architectural plans for Our Lady of the Desert, and guess what?”
Dutifully, I asked, “What?”
“They have confirmed the existence of a hidden passageway!”
Her news reawakened my interest in the story. “No kidding?”
“And get this,” Clara continued with a tone of restrained excitement, “she also tracked down a man at an assisted-living facility who once worked as a custodian at the church many years ago. He told her that one particular priest, who was quite elderly, showed him how to access the entrance.”
