I shook off the aura of melancholy that hung over me and began to search in earnest. The area was larger than I had imagined. Along one wall, I spotted what looked like a damaged, but elaborately carved, confessional crammed between two concrete pillars. On either side of it were two doors, one solid, and one with a small, barred window. My hopes leaped. Did one of them provide a way out? I approached the first door and pulled on the handle until it creaked open. I shined the light inside, sweeping it over piles of broken pews, wooden crosses, boxes of Christmas and Easter decorations and other discarded items.
