The man before her looked nothing like she had expected. Of course she expected him to be handsome, one couldn't expect less from a demon. But she not expect this breathtaking man to appear before her. The first thing she noticed was his unusual silver eyes, reminding her of smoke coming from a fire. His hair flowed down his shoulder, silver just like his eyes, thick and shiny. He had a chiseled, well defined face but his long thick lashes and pale pink lips gave a look that was a mix of both roughness and delicacy.
Dessa was lost in a trance but was immediately jolted back to the present when she heard someone clear their throat. She told herself to look away but for some reason, her body wasn't responding to her will.
The ceremony started without any further delay. It was clear and obvious to any passerby that no one in the wedding hall was in a celebration spirit. The only emotions the guests were feeling were fear, jealousy, helplessness and pain, and of course greed.
Fear because Zamien Ylvai, the devilish and evil creature was standing in their mist, with a cold smirk about to be wed to their nation's princess.
Jealousy because the princess Irridessa was just an adopted little peasant girl and a fool. In the eyes of the noble ladies she wasn't worthy to marry such a powerful prince even though the would never want to be in her shoes.
King Lucius was helplessly watching his wife sniff at intervals. The childless queen could only watch with silent tears as the greedy ministers successfully snatched the child she could finally call her own.
In no time at all, the wedding hastily ended.
Dessa had attended other princesses and noble ladies' weddings before and she smirked at the speed at which they carried out what should be a special occasion. The ministers and noblemen all wanted the benefits that would come from the marriage alliance but it didn't mean any of them wanted to be in the same place as the prince of Rhodes.
Dessa released a deep, quiet sigh when everyone started to quickly move and disperse. She almost couldn't believe how quickly the hall became empty.
Her husband offered her his hand which she took with a fake and frightened smile. Of course Dessa had prepared herself for this for a very long time. She was going to live in Rhodes, the demon's land, so she had worked on her courage. But it didn't stop the fear she was feeling at the moment. She looked at the queen as the demon prince led her towards the door.
Queen Klara was crying. Sobbing quietly where she stood and it took all of Dessa's willpower to stop herself from following her lead. Despite everything that the queen Klara had done for Dessa, from saving her from slave traders to making her a princess, she had never considered the queen as her mother, not even as a second mother. Even if she called the queen mother with love, she had never meant it. She only had one mother and she had allowed herself to get adopted into this place and later get married out in order to avenge that mother and she would never replace her.
But despite all this, she couldn't deny that she had gotten a little attached to the gullible woman. And seeing the beautiful queen she had fooled countless times, stand there and cry for her, she felt sad and her eyes couldn't help but redden.
But the queen was only a chess piece in Dessa's life that had played her part. The only reward Dessa could give her was to secure the life of the child in her womb.
