A Mistake That Almost Was

Luz POV I swirled my fingers around the edges of the shot glass, my mind drifting away slowly. I could feel the alcohol settling deep into my body, however, the pain still lingered. I had never imagined that Mateo could betray me. Even when I saw the evidence on his phone, I still doubted it. I wanted to believe him, wanted to believe that he couldn’t cheat on me, yet he did. Seeing him in bed with another woman felt like a dagger through my heart. “I can’t believe Mateo would do something like this. Are you sure this isn’t some sort of misunderstanding?” Valeria’s voice interjected, breaking me out of my thoughts. She had witnessed my relationship with Mateo from our schooldays till we got married, and never believed he could do something like this. I slowly turned my gaze towards her, and an annoyed look flashed on my face, “I saw it with my own eyes. How could that be a misunderstanding Val?” The room suddenly fell quiet. Valeria looked too puzzled by the whole thing, she did not know what to think. I grabbed the bottle, pouring myself another shot. This was my third bottle, and Mateo’s image was slowly fading away. Suddenly, Valeria grabbed the bottle from my hand, scorching angrily, “Just because Mateo cheated, doesn’t mean you should punish yourself by getting too drunk. You’re already wasted Luz, it’s time to stop drinking and think about what you want to do now.” “Oh, I already know what I want to do.” I let out a cold chuckle. “I’m getting a divorce. Just thinking about him with that woman makes me sick. I can’t stand facing him every day from now, knowing what he did.” “I think you should get some rest first before you make any serious decisions. When you wake up and are much calmer, you can decide what you want to do then. Come, I’ll take you home.” Valeria said with concern. “No, I’m not going back there. I can’t.” I shook her head defiantly. Valeria nodded. She agreed with me that returning to the house would only bring back the painful memories, and so said, “I’ll book you a hotel then.” She quickly pulled out her phone and booked a hotel, then took me to the hotel. As we reached the entrance, my arms were still wrapped around her and I could feel my head spinning slightly. “Do you want me to take you to your room?” I offered her a faint smile, removing my arms from her shoulder, “No, I’m fine. You should get home, it’s getting late.” After that, I gathered myself and walked down the lobby to the elevator. Seeing me walk steadily, Valeria was finally convinced that I could handle myself. She heaved a sigh of relief and turned back. I traipsed into the elevator and barely seeing, I pressed the button for my room floor. The elevator began to ascend and soon the doors opened with a ding. By now, the alcohol had completely taken over, clouding my senses and blurring my vision. As I stumbled out of the elevator, my legs nearly gave out beneath me, but I managed to steady myself by leaning against the wall, dragging myself along it until I found my room number - room 8919. I tried the room keycard on the door but there was no beep. Frowning in frustration, I was about to push the door when it suddenly opened and a large hand pulled me into the room. The door immediately slammed shut, cutting off the light from the hallway. At that moment, I felt a cold dread and panic surging through my body, but before I could react, I felt the warmth of a man’s lips against mine, his hot breath against my ear making me shake. I began to struggle, trying to break free, but with the alcohol dulling my strength, my hands felt weak as I pushed against his chest. However, the man did not stop. I could tell he found my push inviting, as his hands roamed my body leaving a trail of sensations that I hadn’t felt in a long time. For a moment, I wanted to give in. To let this stranger do whatever he wanted to me. I’d heard the best way to get over someone old was to get under someone new, and every inch of my body was dying to let this man ravage me. But I couldn’t. I tried to push him off again, but he easily caught my wrists and pinned my hands above my head. “I love it when you play hard to get. Makes me want you more.” He said, his fingers tracing a line on my face, making me tremble. Almost immediately, I could feel his teeth sink into my neck, biting softly as his fingers slowly unbuttoned my shirt, pushing my self-restraint. However, something tugged at the corner of my mind. Mateo might have cheated on me, but cheating back would make me no different from him. With that, I pushed the man off, forcefully this time. I fumbled my hands along the wall and finally found the light switch and immediately flicked it on. Immediately I saw his face, my body froze in shock. The fear and disgust sobered me instantly, and for a moment I was glad I stopped this before it went too far. Still, standing face to face with him, I couldn’t believe it. The man standing in front of me was Mateo’s uncle, Diego Hill. ‘I almost slept with my husband’s uncle.’ The thought flashed through my mind, causing me to shudder in disgust. “Uncle Diego…?” Diego’s face flashed with horror as he stared back at me unable to say a word. His eyes shifted to my body, seeing the shirt he had almost ripped off, and immediately he turned around, “Get out now!” I suddenly snapped and buttoned my shirt, and rushed out of the hotel room without looking back. Once I was outside the hotel, I checked the room number again trying to figure out what was going on. That was when I realized my mistake. With my blurred vision, I’d gone into room 8919, not 8916 which was the one Valeria had booked for me. I’d entered the wrong room and almost slept with my husband’s uncle. The thought made me sick to my stomach, but unfortunately, there was nothing to do now. ‘Thank goodness I stopped it before anything serious happened.’ I thought, then found my room, swiped the keycard and walked inside. *** Meanwhile, Diego quickly retrieved his phone and dialed a number, his face still darkened from his previous encounter, “I want all surveillance footage from this hotel deleted immediately!” After hanging up, the thoughts still echoed in Diego’s mind. He quickly lit a cigarette, his frustration and fear growing. ‘No one can know what happened here tonight.’ He thought inwardly. He still could not believe it himself. This had almost gone so wrongly. He had almost slept with his nephew’s wife.
