THE SECRET OF THE STONE

965 Words
Kael did not move. His eyes remained fixed on the trees above, sharp and unblinking. The shadow he had seen was gone now — swallowed by the darkness — but the feeling of danger lingered like a cold wind against his skin. “They found us,” he whispered again, more to himself than to anyone else. Behind him, Lira stirred in her sleep. The glowing stone resting against her chest pulsed softly, its light flickering through the folds of her dress. Each pulse was slow and steady, like the beat of a quiet heart. Kael glanced back at her. For a moment, his expression softened. Then the barrier shimmered again. He turned instantly, scanning the clearing. Nothing. No movement. No sound. Just silence. Too much silence. Kael exhaled slowly and lowered his hand from the weapon at his side. Whoever had been watching them had chosen not to attack — not yet. That worried him more. He stepped closer to the center of the clearing and watched Lira carefully. The stone pulsed again. Brighter this time. A thin beam of golden light slipped between her fingers and spread across the ground beneath her. The moss around her began to glow faintly, as if responding to the stone’s energy. Kael frowned. “That’s new,” he murmured. The light grew stronger. Lira shifted slightly, her brow tightening as if she were dreaming. Inside her mind— She was no longer in the clearing. She stood in a vast, unfamiliar place. The air around her shimmered with soft golden light, and tall trees stretched toward the sky — far taller than any she had ever seen in Silvergrove. Their trunks were smooth and pale, covered in glowing symbols that moved slowly like living creatures. A warm wind brushed against her wings. She turned in a slow circle. “Hello?” she called. Her voice echoed through the empty space. No answer. Only light. Then— The ground beneath her feet trembled. A low hum filled the air. The glowing symbols on the trees began to shine brighter, forming patterns that twisted and shifted like flowing water. Fear crept into her chest. “What is this place?” she whispered. Suddenly, the light gathered in front of her. It spun slowly, shaping itself into a single floating object. A stone. The same stone she carried. But larger. Brighter. Older. Lira stepped back instinctively. The stone pulsed once. A voice followed. Deep. Ancient. Gentle. “Bearer of the Light.” Lira froze. Her wings stiffened. “Who said that?” she asked, her voice trembling. The air vibrated softly. “You have awakened what was forgotten.” Her heart began to race. “I don’t understand,” she said. The light around her shifted again, forming images in the air. She saw forests burning. Dark creatures marching. Shadows spreading across the sky. Her breath caught. Then the vision changed. She saw herself. Standing in the center of a great battlefield, holding the glowing stone high above her head. Light poured from it like sunlight breaking through storm clouds, pushing back the darkness. The image faded. Silence returned. Lira shook her head, panic rising. “Stop!” she cried. “I don’t want this!” The light pulsed sharply. “The choice was never yours.” Her chest tightened. Fear and confusion twisted together inside her. “What do you want from me?” she whispered. The answer came slowly. “Balance.” The word echoed through the glowing forest. Then— Everything shattered. The light vanished. The ground disappeared beneath her feet. And she fell. Hard. Lira gasped as her eyes flew open. She sat up suddenly, breathing fast. The clearing returned around her — the moss, the stones, the quiet forest night. Her wings trembled, and sweat clung to her skin. Kael was already beside her. “What happened?” he asked. She stared at him, still shaken. “I… I saw something,” she said. Her voice trembled. “A place. Trees. Light everywhere.” Kael’s expression grew serious. “A vision?” She nodded slowly. “There was a voice,” she continued. “It called me… the bearer of the light.” Kael went very still. The words clearly meant something to him. “What else did it say?” he asked. Lira swallowed. “It said I awakened something… something forgotten.” The stone in her hand began to glow again. Softly. Steadily. Kael stared at it, tension rising in his shoulders. “What did it want?” he asked quietly. She hesitated. Then answered: “Balance.” The word hung between them. Heavy. Important. Kael exhaled slowly, as if confirming a fear he had tried to ignore. “So it has begun,” he said. Lira’s heart pounded. “What has begun?” she asked. Kael looked directly into her eyes. “Your awakening.” Fear tightened in her chest. “My what?” He stepped back slightly, giving her space. “The stone isn’t just reacting to you,” he said. “It’s choosing you.” The forest grew still. Even the wind seemed to pause. Lira stared down at the glowing stone in her trembling hand. “I never asked for this,” she whispered. Kael’s voice softened. “No one ever does.” A sudden ripple passed through the barrier surrounding the clearing. Sharp. Violent. Kael’s head snapped toward the trees. His eyes darkened instantly. “They’re here,” he said. Lira’s breath caught. “Who?” Kael’s voice dropped to a low, tense whisper. “The hunters.” The forest erupted with movement. Branches snapped. Leaves scattered. And from the darkness beyond the clearing— Multiple pairs of glowing red eyes opened at once. Watching. Waiting. Closing in.
