Nelson was engrossed in reading about his mom's new achievement: Lily's design had won an international jewelry competition for the second time in a row.
A smile spread across his face as he read, a rare sight for him, especially in class where he was typically serious. Some students were astonished, while others, consumed by jealousy, decided that he would pay for smiling.
At lunch break, they pulled him away from the teachers' watchful eyes and began bullying him.
"Nelson, we heard your mommy is a slut. That’s why you don’t have a daddy!"
The hurtful words stung as they echoed in his mind. Nelson tightened his fist in anger. He wanted to hit them, but he remembered his mom’s wishes—she didn't want him to fight. He knew using his words was more effective than resorting to violence, so he decided to ignore them.
As he turned to walk away, they pushed him to the floor.
