Vernon glared at him, "Seriously? Why would I make up something like that?" Vernon wasn't annoyed even though it was pretty obvious that Dev did not believe him but he didn't care, he was too much in a good mood to care.
He would worry about his problem later but for now, he was just glad he got to see his sister. He was worried about her though and he wondered if his mother had spoken about him to her considering she had gotten his name in one try.
"I don't know, maybe because you're desperate to believe she is your sister." Dev didn't make eye contact as he spoke these words.
It wasn't like he was trying to bring Vernon's excitement down nor was it that he thought that Vernon was lying but what about the off chance that he was wrong. Besides, his sister being here meant a lot of things.
He doubted she would get special treatment just because she was his sister which meant in a couple of months, she would start exhibiting symptoms, and then she would be gone forever.
What would that mean for Vernon? He knew there was nothing they could do to prevent it. He doubted it was something Vernon could handle and maybe now was not the right time to think about it but it was all he could think about.
He hated that he had to rain on Vernon's parade but he would rather Vernon be wrong than lose his sister in a couple of months to come. Obviously, Vernon was not thinking about this now because he was on cloud nine but eventually, it would come back to bite him in the butt.
It was super easy for them to distance themselves from the situation because they didn't have that much relationship with the kids. It was not really their business, all they had to do was take care of them but this new development complicated situations. There was no way Vernon would let them take his sister and he could not see a situation where they would be victorious.
"And she is, you are just jealous." Vernon knew Dev did not mean any harm and knowing Dev was already thinking about what this meant but he was not about to dwell on it, he worry about it when the time came, for now, he would revel in the fact that he found his sister, he had been super worried that his sibling had been one of the people he had said goodbye to and he had not even realized.
Out of the options he had it was either this or she did not show up at all but since he could not have the latter, he was glad he got the former. He got to see her. He would worry about what came after later.
He spent most of the day with her and even when Madame Rebecca tried to chase him, he came back. However, she could not complain because Penn would not let anybody else feed her except Vernon.
Thankfully, once it was dark she fell asleep, he could not blame her, considering what she had been through, it was likely to be a long sleep. He finally left and he went to bed immediately but didn't even go to sleep just as fast.
It was funny because earlier in the afternoon, he thought he was going to die when Dev would not let him sleep but heard he was, finding it hard to sleep because of excitement.
Lying in bed made him think of his parents and he wondered how they were feeling. His mother would be devastated, first, she lost him and now Penn. He would give anything to see her again, to see his parents again.
He couldn't help but wonder when that would happen, Dev could not even remember his parents because he had been taken from them when he was so young and in all the years he had lived at the academy, not once has he seen them or seen anyone who got a chance to see their parents again.
So lost in his thoughts was he that he did not even realize when he fell asleep. He woke up to the bell ringing and he woke up with a headache. He didn't need to know that he still needed more rest to replenish his lost Mana.
Steven wasn't making him do new things because he felt Vernon was deliberately not trying, so his big idea was to give Vernon tasks he was already good at and made him repeatedly do it until he ran out of Mana.
It was a tiring exercise and Vernon found himself hating Steven for it but even though he knew he was going to have a shitty day ahead and that his head was banging like crazy, he still jumped out of bed with a big smile.
He showered with the boys humming a tone only he knew, he couldn't even remember where he had heard it from, and the chance that he made it up himself was pretty high.
However, none of this mattered to him as he got ready and even when he went off tone and began to sound like a broken record, he still hummed with enthusiasm. Dressed with enthusiasm and was one of the first to get ready.
"Isn't somebody in a good mood?" Dev had teased him when he was finally ready.
"Why shouldn't I be? You should try it sometime, it feels good." He laughed and continued humming.
"You might want to turn it down a notch though, Evil is not going to like it when you don't show up broken." Dev chuckled as he spoke. "And I am sure you don't want any extra work."
"Nah, with the way I am feeling I can take anything he throws my way." Vernon winked but he knew it was just words and he would probably be depressed soon enough but now that he had something to look forward to, he was certain he could handle anything.
