The boy opened his mouth to speak and Vernon felt time slow down and all went quiet, in an instant without him having to tell them to be quiet.
"I am Marvis," he said. "You may call me Marvis. This is Lae," he added, gesturing to her as he spoke. She waved and giggles flew out in the air as the students waved back even though every single person in the room already knew her name.
"This is Boy," He pointed exactly to where Invisible Boy stood and Vernon knew this because Boy— which was a weird name in his opinion —still had his hand on his shoulder.
However, this was not for long as Boy immediately took his hand off Vernon's shoulder and said, "I do not need an introduction, I am sure they are all perfectly aware of who I am."
It was pretty fast and Vernon would not have seen it if his face and gaze had not been in the perfect direction. Marvis turned his face towards Boy and in a fleeting moment, a glare passed across his face.
Vernon would have sworn Boy became smaller even though he could not even sense his presence let alone see him. It was a scary look and Vernon looked ahead, afraid that he had seen something that he should not have.
Almost immediately Marvis chuckled, "I hear he is quite the menace." His voice held nothing of what had transpired between him and Boy. Not another word was spoken out of Boy.
"Yes," could be heard across the rooms as people issued their complaints.
"Vernon."
Vernon froze, his eyes widened. There was no way his ears were deceiving him and unless they were, Marvis, one of the Unmagic, did not just say his name. He turned towards him slowly, he would have sworn he heard the creaking of his neck.
"Yes," he replied softly, worried that he had heard what was not spoken and now he would look like an i***t but that was not the case as Marvis had moved closer to his table and was now staring him in the eye.
"I heard you're the latest bloomer. Your eyes glowed years before your magic revealed itself." Marvis said, looking down on Vernon and placing his hand on the same shoulder that Boy had.
Vernon felt himself go red even though he was lucky enough that it would not show on his skin but he could feel his cheeks and the top of his ears grow warm. This was common information and everyone still teased him about it but this did not make it any less embarrassing.
It didn't help that Marvis had a very loud voice. Vernon was not sure how he felt about him before but now he was certain he did not like Marvis and it didn't help that Marvis' hand on his shoulder made his skin crawl.
Vernon could only nod. What else could he say to Marvis' words? And it did not sound like a question so Vernon knew Marvis was not asking for affirmation. Though it was still hard to contain his shock that Marvis knew about him. He had so many questions as to what the circumstances were that led to Marvis knowing about him. Why and How is the top on the list.
He could feel all eyes on him again and he bit the insides of his cheeks. Since he got here, it has just been from one spotlight to another. It was getting very exhausting and here he was thinking it could not get any worse than it already was.
"I can see your mana, it seems a lot unstable." Marvis continued on.
Vernon's brows dipped not at the fact that his mana was unstable but at the fact that Marvis just said he could see it. "You can see it?" He asked before he could stop himself.
"Yes," Marcus replied and Vernon would have sworn his chest puffed up, it also didn't help that surprised shrieks erupted from every corner of the room.
"Is that your magic?" Vernon's eyes widened in excitement. Variations of magic were something he could not get enough of.
Marvis burst into laughter and Vernon felt himself internally cringe and get embarrassed as he could not think of what he had said that had been so funny. "Child, no. This does not even come close to what my magic can really do."
Vernon blinked and blinked again. Child! He was certain he had heard wrong. Marvis definitely meant to say something else but even as he thought that, he knew he was wrong. Marvis did mean to call him a child.
"I could even help you fix your messed up Mana but alas I do not have the time," Marcus announced, self righteously.
For some reason, Vernon could tell he had no plan of helping him out whatsoever and the fact that he said he wanted to help was just for his own benefit. Vernon did not respond but there was no need to as someone immediately came up to Marvis.
"Can you see my mana?" A girl asked.
Marvis took his hand off Vernon's shoulder and released the breath he was not even aware of holding. The attention was finally off him and he could not be more grateful. He returned to eating this food which was already cold at this point as everyone cooed over Marvis asking that he tell them what their Mana looked like.
All it took was just one girl and soon enough there was a crowd around him. A lot of people were too close for comfort considering Marvis was standing not so far from Vernon's table and the crowd was slightly increasing.
A couple of his roommates did stand up from his table to join them as Marvis told them what he could see about their Mana. A lot of them got "pretty good". Some "wow that's a lot of Mana,". Nobody else got unstable and even though Vernon tried not to be bothered by it, it still rang at the back of his head.
