CHAPTER FORTY-TWO

1002 Words
Barely three days after the fight, Vernon was walking to his side of the room when the boys stopped him. "How long are you going to keep ignoring us?" Dev asked, staring at him. He slowed down but didn't say a word. He knew what this was about but he wasn't about to make it easy for them. It had not been in any way easy for him. He folded his arms, showing defiance as he kept mum to show that he was indeed willing to go without speaking to them for as long as he possibly could. Was it a bit lonely? Yes but that wasn't the important part. The important part was he could bear the loneliness. He also found that he wasn't just angry with Nevil but everybody that had supported him which literally meant everybody else. "Look," Dev sighed. "You have to talk to us at some point, you can't go on like this." Vernon scoffed, throwing his head to the side but somehow managed to hold his tongue. "Seriously? Are you going to still not say anything?" Dev protested. Vernon stared hard and hoped his eyes said exactly what he was thinking which was, "watch me!" He ignored the rest of the boys but from the corner of his eyes, he could see that the majority of his roommates that were present during the fight were present now. He had come to the conclusion that he wasn't just mad at Nevil, he was mad at all of them. The fact that nobody had been on his side felt like receiving a blow while he was down. They really didn't like him. "I am sorry," he heard a low voice say as whoever it was, began to walk towards him. He recognized the voice instantly but he didn't turn his face to the direction the sound was coming from rather he locked eyes with Dev, refusing to look at Nevil. "Vernon," Nevil called, he obviously wasn't giving up. Vernon took his time before he looked at Nevil and then raised his left brow. He had not forgiven any of them yet and until he did, he would make a mental note not to speak to any of them. Nevil had his head a little bent but knew the instant Vernon turned his attention to him. He swallowed before speaking, "I am sorry, I didn't mean for it to get out of hand, I just wanted to tell you why I didn't want to talk to you all this while." He sighed but still didn't speak. Just kept his gaze ok Nevil. The poor boy eventually raised his head to look at him. "You have to say something, Vernon!" Dev was the one who spoke. He rolled his eyes, he guessed it was time to sort this issue out. He was not one to hold a grudge so, doing this was extremely uncomfortable for him as it was for them even though he tried to convince himself that he was fine, he really didn't like the fact that he was deliberately not speaking to them. "Fine, I will speak," he said, still looking at Nevil. "Yeah right, if you wanted to tell, you would have done so without telling everybody else first even though you knew my mother would never do anything like that." "I'm sorry," Nevil said, he wanted badly to counter Vernon's words but he didn't really want this to escalate more than it already has. The first time he had seen Vernon after leaving home, he had been so shocked that he didn't know how to react and a lot of his shock must have shone on his face because Vernon had stopped in his tracks and walked away and from then on it had just become more awkward and more awkward. He really did believe Vernon's mother was the reason why he was here because his mother said so and he had not once thought otherwise even though he still couldn't figure out why Vernon's mother would do it considering she was really nice to him and never complained whenever he and Vernon played together except of course when it got out of hand. However, his shock and refusal to talk to Vernon had nothing to do with Vernon's mother rather the guilt he felt when he saw him because he knew there was no other reason he would be here. Vernon's mother would have been extremely careful and would probably not have let Vernon out of her sight like she usually did. So, it only meant one thing, his mother. The guilt he had felt was intense because somehow he had seen it coming and had been a little happy about it but only in his first week of arriving here. After the second week, he found that he quite adapted to life here and he was a bit fine with it. He had completely pushed the thought of Vernon coming here out of his mind. However, it was not to be and it was so shocking to see that eventually, his mother had gone through with her plans. He had ended overthinking about the issue, guilt-tripping himself, and in an effort to not feel like he was to blame for the fact that Vernon was now in the same condition as he was because he had seen it coming and somehow had a hand in it. Therefore, in an effort not to feel bad he had pushed all the blame on Vernon and his mother and had felt justified in keeping his distance. However, he couldn't help but notice how Vernon was struggling and he wanted to do something to help, oy he had gone about it the wrong way and had ended up pissing Vernon off. Now, all he could do was apologize and he hoped it would be enough to fix the mess. "I am sorry." He repeated, there was nothing else he wanted to add, just that he was sorry.
