CHAPTER THIRTY-EIGHT

1016 Words
"Aren't you a little too curious today? Besides, even if I told you, you wouldn't know it." "What is…" Vernon started to say but Vivk interrupted. "Eh, eh, eh! The last thing I want out of your mouth is more questions. Well, I am glad you found your magic powers and can use them quite well. Nothing extraordinary," Vivk said as he studied the flowers. Vernon rolled his eyes at Vivk criticism. "I started two days ago. I am sure the other children didn't go about growing flowers in three days." Even though Vernon said these words with conviction, he hoped they were true. Though Pam had praised him as he had a steady growth, he noticed she didn't say anything special to him or about him and his magic. "Yeah, yeah whatever. I hear from Pam that she is trying to make you guys grow a plant from scratch but it has not been going very smoothly." Vivk switched trying to lighten the mood, he wasn't trying to attack Vernon but it wasn't surprising that the boy had some bottled-up issues and insecurities about his magic. His defensiveness was a surprise even though Vivk had kind of expected it. "Well, a couple of them did try to get better and they did. One of them was able to c***k a seed open and it sprouted but that was it. I am sure they will get it soon enough." Vernon muttered, looking down at his legs. He hoped Vivk didn't have any more tasks for him because he so badly wanted to leave. He couldn't comprehend while he was reacting this way but Vivk's reaction was not what he had been expecting. He had expected praise at the fact that he did not need too much time, energy, or more to figure out his magic powers but all he got was, "Nothing extraordinary" for some reason, it had rubbed him off the wrong way. "I see," Vivk returned and held his chin with his thumb and index finger. He found it odd that Vernon had referred to his magic group members as them, secluding himself even in his sentences. He did not want to dwell on this too much because it wasn't a surprise, considering what Vernon had to go through. No surprise he did not consider himself to be a part of the group yet. Vivk was of the opinion that this would change soon enough, so he didn't talk or even think much about it. "Okay, there is no need for me to keep you here much longer. So, um yeah, you may be on your way." Vivk said and the words were barely out of his mouth when Vernon turned around and began to slowly walk away. He got to the door and slowly opened it but then proceeded to close the door with a bang that Vivk swore. He couldn't protest though even though he couldn't see where the kid was coming from but the young lad already had a tough time, he wasn't about to make it tougher. Vernon strode to his room, his destination was the bed, he could use a nap and a long one at that. He couldn't believe Vivk just wanted to show him what he could do then why in heaven's name did the dwarf make him wait that long earlier. He didn't want to think about it so he walked even faster and in an attempt to distract himself, he found himself thinking about the taboo and he still had a lot of questions but he doubted anyone had answers for him. Truthfully, he didn't care. He just wanted to go back to his mother. He was sick of this place. At first, he thought finding his powers was the next big thing, which was what was important but now that that was out of the way, he found that he still wanted to go home. He opened the door a little bit too loudly, instantly silencing the room. Only a few of the boys were in it as this was free time so, you could basically do whatever you wanted. They all turned to look at him but he ignored them and didn't pause for a moment or make eye contact as he made his way to his bed. Dev tried to catch his eyes but he completely ignored him even though he felt bad about it, he wasn't about to converse about it. From the corner of his eyes, he could see Nevil but he was over that and now he wasn't even that curious to find out why his best friend wouldn't even talk to him. That was a complete lie, he was dying to find out but it wasn't at the top of his list, leaving this place was but he knew could and it made him sad and tired. He wanted to cry, throw a fit but he didn't want to seem like a cry baby in front of them especially after acting so tough. So, he carefully crawled in his bed and covered himself completely, facing the wall just in case the blanket slipped and they saw him crying. He sobbed a little, making sure to not make too much noise. He didn't even bother wiping his face but the more he cried, the sleepier he felt, and soon enough he could barely keep his eyes open. He soon fell into a deep sleep where he dreamt of home, dreamt of his mother. This was no surprise and when the bell for the last dinner finally rang and jolted Vernon from his deep and well deserved sleep, he felt even worse than before he had gone to sleep. It was a hassle to leave his bed. However, he groggily made his way to the cafeteria and even managed to smile at Florence as she gave him his meal. He sat with the boys and the fact that they wouldn't stop talking pissed him off the most. He was the first one out when dinner was finally over.
