Dev raised a brow at Vernon's explanation, day two and one would think he was finally used to the idea but truthfully he wasn't and he could see that Vernon was not backing down from the idea that the new kid was his sister.
"You look crazy," he said with a fake laugh, trying to hide how he truly felt. Since Vernon was truly invested in her, he didn't want to ruin it for any of them
It gave him an odd emotion he didn't understand, didn’t even know what to do with it. It also put him in a weird spot and try as he might, he couldn't help but think about what would happen in a few months from now.
When the time came, would an exception be made? Will they be able to figure it out? He knew he was worrying too early but he could not help it and he hated the helplessness that accompanied the thoughts. The fact that he knew no amount of thinking was sure to give him a solution.
“You are just jealous of our bond and you are a hater,” Vernon replied and stuck out his tongue at Dev.
“A hater? A bond? What the heck are you talking about, you just met her yesterday. I am sure there is a stronger bond between her and the toy than you right now.” Dev defended, he was slightly irritated and he could not figure out why.
“Sounds exactly like what a hater would say.” Vernon scoffed and returned his attention to Penn who had been intensely watching the both of them argue. Her head bobbled from left to right as she studied whoever was speaking at the moment.
At Vernon’s reply, Dev shook his head and said, “You are delusional.” he chuckled at the end of it though he could exactly say what was funny.
“Even better, it still sounds like someone who is jealous.” Vernon taunted, he did not really think that but he was enjoying the great length Dev was going to explain that he was not jealous of a relationship that was less than a day old.
“You know what, I am going away and I am not jealous,” he scoffed as he walked away and Vernon tried hard not to burst into laughter immediately.
Dev’s thoughts did not leave him as he walked away. He truly did not think he was jealous but the fact that Vernon remotely suggested it kind of bothered him a little. He had never really thought about his parents, he had a couple of memories of them but nothing concrete, nothing he could use. He could not even remember their voices let alone their faces.
The only thing he was certain of was the color of their hair and that was because it was the same color as his so it was easy to remember. He did not recall having any siblings but a part of him felt like he might have had and there was even a possibility that they passed through her.
Dev knew he would never forgive himself if he ever found out he had missed a brother or a sister and he paid attention to the other kids, he tried to think of thoughts that had nothing to do with sad and gloomy thoughts.
Vernon spared no other kid his attention and even when he did as soon as Penn so much as sniffled or whined a little he was by her side. He couldn't help it but he was glad that his presence sort of made a difference.
She was crying less which was pretty noticeable and Vernon could not help but think she knew who he was and even if she did not the idea made him feel good, so he kept believing it even though the chance that she did not know who he was to her was pretty higher than that chance that she knew he was her brother.
She let out bubbles and Vernon tried to pop them and right in the middle of the third one, the thought crossed his mind that he was playing with slobber but he quickly pushed it away and continued on.
He literally spent the rest of his day with her but not once did he think he was spending too much time and even felt sad when it was time for the first dinner and he had to leave. She looked sad when he was about to leave but she did not cry.
He was glad she was getting used to the academy. It was not like she had any other options but considering how much she had been crying the day before, he had been a little afraid it would take her a little longer to get used to the new place. She surprised him.
He could not wait for the first dinner to be over and Dev could see him be jittery. Normally, they did not have to return once it was dinner time and usually they didn't but now, it was pretty obvious well, at least for Vernon that he would return.
Usually, Madame Rebecca and a couple of other Madames used the period to take care of the kids, feed them, clean them up, and then return them to their quarters where they usually spend the rest of the day before they are put to bed.
The students that volunteer to play with the children usually have no business with them for the rest of the day after the first dinner. However, nobody chased him away when he went back after the first dinner the day before and he was hoping it would be the same case today.
He wasn't sure how long they would keep letting him but he had no intention of stopping until he was chased and even if he was, he would keep going back until they let him.
Eventually, they would have to let him because he had no intention of giving up. He smirked as he ate, feeling good about his idea and how he planned to execute it.
