Vernon had been at the academy for a while, it was getting close to a year if he calculated right and his magic skills were still the same as the first time he could do magic. He was trying not to let it bother him but seeing the other improve while he just remained in a spot was frustrating and it didn't help that his former best friend and now just regular friend was at the top.
Jay would not stop teasing him about it, even though he tried to ignore him. Each time they brushed shoulders, it was the one point he tried to use to bring him down. He tried not to let it bother him but it was pretty hard.
People were building trees from seeds and the most he could manage was a flower bush, it was embarrassing as hell. Pam seemed to have given up on him either and gave him meager tasks to do, nothing gruesome like the rest of the group.
Vernon groaned as he rolled to his side and faced the wall. Nothing was going right and the everyday routine was getting tiring. There were days it was taking a lot to get out of bed and now he was just doing it, simply because he had to because there was no want in any way.
He still had a couple of minutes before he had to rush out to the cafeteria and then the courtyard, everyone else was still trying to finish up dressing but he had woken up early so he was pretty ready. What better way to spend it than to try to recharge before he has to face the day?
"Vernon, what are you doing?" He heard a voice cry as they shook him vigorously.
He opened his eyes to find Dev standing above him, he was confused for a whole but it did not take him long to figure out he had slept off. He took one look around and in a quick glance, he could tell that it was just the both of them. At least Dev had been nice enough to notice.
"I am sorry, I slept off." He muttered slowly and wiped his eyes. Trying to rub out the sleepiness from them.
"I didn't even realize you weren't with us until I got to the door of the cafeteria. Hurry up, I think something very special is happening today." Dev threw out, grinning from ear to ear.
"What?" Vernon asked, sitting upright and trying to push himself out of bed.
"I don't know," replied Dev, who was skipping from side to side. "Hurry up, let's go see." He was trying to get Vernon out of bed faster and one could tell that the urge to pull Vernon off the bed was strong and that he was barely keeping himself together.
Vernon finally jumped out and Dev pulled him before he could get his bearings, almost causing an accident but thankfully, Vernon was able to recover before he landed head first on the ground. "Wait, let me wear my shoes, Dev. You know we can't wear it in bed."
"Yeah, forgot about that. Sorry." Dev apologized, letting go of Vernon's hand like it had burnt him.
Vernon chuckled at Dev's reaction. "No, it is fine. It would have been a different case if I had fallen on my face though."
Vernon raised his head from looking at his feet just so he could see Dev's reaction to his words and of course, Deb did not disappoint. His face lost a little color and his mouth opened in a little gasp.
"I am just kidding, Dev." Vernon threw out almost immediately and returned his attention to wearing his shoes then slowly muttered. "Thanks for coming back to get me Dev."
Dev nodded feeling a little red even though Vernon could not see his reply but knew Vernon did not say that to get a reply and he just said nothing as he stood waiting for him to finish up.
"All done," he announced and jumped up.
"Okay then," but he was already going out the door as he spoke.
"Dev," Vernon cried and ran after him.
They literally skipped to the cafeteria and half the students were already seated eating. Vernon took a look around and knew instantly that something was up. The atmosphere was different. Everything was still the same, there was absolutely no change but the air felt very different, tense even like something usually was about to happen.
"What do you think it is?" Dev whispered as they joined the queue.
"Nobody really knows but there are guesses that the three are around, The Unmagic," Dev said the last part like one would say the scary part to a horror story.
Vernon's eyes widened and his fatigue flew out of the window. He found it hard to believe that the unmagic were really coming. He had been at the academy for a full year and the only one he had seen was Invisible boy.
This was because invisible boy was literally everywhere, he crept on the boys and the girls, scaring them. Literally, nobody liked him and he was always invisible. As active as he was Vernon and nobody else has seen what he looked like.
They all have arrived at the conclusion that he either had an exponential amount of Mana or he was born invisible. Theories and jokes have come up as what he would have looked like when he was younger and if his mother was shocked to see an invisible child.
Nobody knew much about his power aside from the fact that he was invisible and he could turn other things invisible too. There was also the fact that unless he revealed himself, you would never find him, and even if you touched him, you would not know and the same rule also applied to the things he made invisible but he had to be in constant contact with the said item to keep it invisible. Apparently, he could also do it to people too.
