Vernon managed to get away with two hours and then he heard an angry stumping heading his way. He didn't need to think about who he was; he could take a guess without even hearing the footsteps. He sighed, his fun was over.
He didn't even try to think of an excuse as she appeared, nothing he would say would be good enough. "Vernon!" Her voice thundered in the open space.
Vernon jerked even though he had seen this coming. He immediately sat upright from the way he laid, bracing himself for the worst.
She didn't stop walking until she came to where he was. "Why are you out of bed?"
He looked everywhere except her. She immediately bent and raised him up by the shoulders. "Ooh, your temperature has gone down."
The change in her tone was so sudden that it took Vernon a while to hear what she said. "It has?"
She was not listening as she began touching him everywhere. His forehead, his neck, his arms, even his legs. "Madame Rachel," he cried.
Even as she checked, he realized that his headache was gone. He had not even noticed but his headache was completely gone. "When did it happen?"
"I don't know but I literally had to crawl here, most have happened while I was…" Vernon took one look at Madame Rachel's face and realized he had f****d.
"You left your bed before you got better?!"
It was a question but he knew if he answered he was finished. He swallowed and tried to take a step back. She did not let him. She checked his temperature again as if she wanted to be sure her hands were not deceiving her.
"Huh!" She said suddenly and Vernon wondered what was going on as she looked down at her legs.
He looked down with her to find Penn hitting her legs with her arms. She quickly let go of him to pick Penn open. Vernon did not think he had ever since a child broken into tears so fast before and he had been around a lot of children.
Madame Rachel's reaction was instantaneous. She dropped Penn almost immediately and Penn ran to Vernon and grabbed his leg, he also noticed she was no longer crying.
"Vernon, return back to the infirmary." She ordered, pretending like what happened did not just happen.
"But Madame Rachel, you said it yourself that I am so much better." Vernon cried, he could not go back to the infirmary.
"No, I did not. I said, your temperature was lower. It is not low enough but it is definitely lower than yesterday. Now, go and get enough rest you can always return when you're completely healed." She ordered without giving him a chance to plead his case.
"But I just got here," he lied and from the corner of his eyes he checked to make sure Madame Rebecca was not in hearing range even though he doubted she would counter him but he was not taking any chances.
Madame Rebecca did not raise her head from what she was doing even though he knew she had heard him as clear as day. He was grateful for that.
"I don't care, Vernon, you shouldn't have left your bed in the first place." She muttered but thankful she was not in his face anymore but rather stood feet away with her arms folded as she scolded him.
Vernon sighed, he didn't want to leave at all but he knew if he did not bargain right he would have to leave right this moment. "What if I get one more hour, Madame Rachel? I have been in bed all day yesterday, I am sure an hour would not make that much difference."
He thought to do puppy eyes but he knew he would look pathetic, so he just stuck with clasping his finger in front of him like he was saying a prayer and indeed he was.
Madame Rachel sighed and then said, "Alright then. An hour but if you're not out of here in an hour, I will come to drag you back myself."
He smiled in satisfaction despite himself at the tiny victory. One hour was not a lot of time but right now it was and he intended to use it wisely and he was certain in less than an hour magic training would be over, so even if he had to leave he would not be leaving the toddlers alone. The rest would be sure to take his place.
He watched her leave, she did not seem very pleased but he was glad he got away with it. Knowing her, she would definitely keep her eyes on the watch and would be back in precisely an hour so he had to make sure he was out of here by then or she might give him some restrictions. He totally did not want that.
An hour passed by faster than he wanted and he found himself back in his room, it was hard to leave because Penn cried when he did and he felt bad but he promised her that he would be back, and that sort of calmed her.
He had not spent a second in bed when the door opened with so much force he jerked and jerked again. The first time was the loud bang that caused the door to open, the second time was when the door hit the nearby wall.
He saw a look of shock and embarrassment as Madame Rachel rushed to stop the door from moving. She then gently shut it close before she approached him on the bed.
"Thank your lucky stars you kept to your word, I planned to lock you in if I had seen the bed empty. You would have not stepped another foot outside until you were completely healed." She said it like a joke but Vernon knew it was not a joke and that she meant every single word she spoke.
