Chapter 3 The fridge, of course, had been almost empty for the last few days. While there was no problem with the power—the solar cells that stood in the paddock outside Tom’s bedroom window still provided enough electricity to run the fridge, or Mother’s car—it was that the shop had run out of most things, including milk. However, Tom knew where he could get some, so he packed up the baby echidna in a towel, which he knotted so he could wear it as a sling, and got on his bike. Mother would normally forbid Tom riding his bike on the highway, because there were huge road trains, but she said nothing, even though she must have known where he was going.
