Chapter 2

1610 Words
“What!?” Jane and I am both completely shocked, her mouth actually wide open in pure horror. “Apparently it was her birthday yesterday. Katie’s I mean..” Christopher trails off. “How did this happen?” I say as Jane is, probably for the first time in her life completely lost for words. “Well, I didn’t see what happened at first, but she had gone too him or something, you know, feeling the mate bond, and he just coldly told her that he didn’t feel anything. I think that shock her quite a lot. She just stood there and he turned away to continue his conversation with his friends, I guess. She graped his arm, so he turned around to face her again and asked rather annoyed if she hadn’t heard him the first time. I think she told him again that she felt the mate bond and he just said: “then I reject you, Katie Anne Miller, as my mate.” The whole room just went completely silent, I mean you could have heard a pin drop. There must have been more than a 100 people in the room” “Oh my goodness, poor Katie!” Jane says breathlessly. She knows Katie better than I, as they have both taking Healing Sciences 1 and 2. After the first obligatory course in Basic Healing I had distanced myself quite a lot from that particular subject. I wasn’t quite fan of all the blood and sewing human parts back together. Yes, being a wolf, who doesn’t like blood is quite an evil joke the Universe has played on me. “What did he do then?” I asked. “He just um.. well, Katie just kind of collapsed in front of him. It was like watching someone implode, but without a sound. He grabbed her arm to steady her, but she fell one knee to the floor. She just started sobbing, making these horrible sounds, turning her face to the floor. He just gently lifted her chin up, looked her in the eyes and calmly, almost softly said: ‘Katie, you’re making a scene, which is not appropriate for a woman of your status. Look around you. Dry your eyes, fix yourself up, and take the rest of the day off. There’s no reason for this to cause any fuss.’ He dropped her chin, turned around, gestured to his friends, and they left the room.” Christopher finishes his sentence with an air of almost not believing his own words. “What about Katie? Where is she now?” The concern is beaming out of Jane and it feels like she’s about to storm out and go find her friend, to make sure she’s okay. That’s one of the things I really like about Jane. She cares. She’s an actual good friend and a good person. I am not quite as good a person. My thoughts are not with poor Katie, but filled with curiosity; Katie is a beautiful, lean girl with shoulder length black hair and deep green eyes. She has a sharp face with high cheekbones and a narrow nose and I would guess she is also almost a head taller than me like Jane. She is definitely hot. And if you are to believe gossip, she would perfectly well keep her family status as Beta. She would be a fine match for an Alfa. They must even have played together growing up. He is only a year older than her. Why had he turned her away so coldly? “Hannah and Karaline took her to her room immediately after the whole scene,” Christopher answered Jane. She looked at us apologetically: “I’m sorry, but I have to go see, if she’s okay, I mean she’s probably not, but I..” “No it’s okay, of cause. Go be there for you friend! You’ve already done most the work on this project, Christopher and I will take care of the rest today.” I assured and gave her a hug. She nodded, and left quickly headed toward where Christopher had just emerged a few minutes ago. We just stand in silence, Christopher and I as we watch her disappear into the south east building of the patio. I turn to begin the quest to find a cosy corner in one of the many living room of the North Tower, when I notice Christopher has tears in his eyes. I’m completely dumbfounded by this. I pad his arm and it is as he is pulled away from some distant place in his mind and looks down at me. I give him a small smile. “I’m sorry,” he says, “ I just a little beside myself.” “No worries. I bet I’d be a little ruffled if I had just witnessed what you did. Just means you’re not some cold piece of shit.” He gives a small nod. “Let’s go inside and find somewhere warm.” We spend the rest of the afternoon in the Green Living room, which is Christopher’s favorite. Jane is right about his lack of motivation concerning this written assignment, but I don’t mind writing in his company. He talks more, when it’s just the two of us. He helps now and then, finding passages in the right books to quote and giving his own input when it strikes him. As I finely look up the sky outside has turned a deep dark blue, and Christopher is nodding of in the comfortable chair across from me. He really is quite cute. Maybe I do have a little thing for him, as Jane suggested this morning. I dab his foot gently with mine. His eyes flicks open. “I think we’re done for the day,” I tell him. He smiles the way I like, and stretches in the chair. “Time for dinner?” He asks. It gets dark early in November, so it isn’t quite yet, but my tummy is rumbling. “Maybe we can find a little snack in the kitchen.” I suggest, “There’s still an hour til dinner time.” He nods and we gather our things and get up to leave. The wind is hard outside, and a few drops of rain hits my forehead as we head toward the main building and out from underneath the protecting overhang of the passage around to patio. “I think we better run, if we wanna make it to the main hall dry,” says Christopher. He doesn’t need to say that twice. I start running and he immediately follows. We make it just in time as thunder loudly fills the air and the sky opens and rain poors over the grounds of Wellshire Castle. Laughing we move through the grand welcoming hall, as suddenly he pulls me into a small corridor. His body is pressed against mine as I feel my pulse fastening and he puts his soft lips against mine. The kiss is soft, but then deepens, and I put one hand on his chest and the other dives into his hair. His left hand is on me waist as the other slowly moves towards my butt cheek. He grasps it tightly and bites my lip. Someone clears his throat and we fly from each other, hands behind ours back like children caught doing mischief. The Alfa to be, Alexander, is standing in the corridor, lips pressed tight together. “I’m so sorry Alfa, I didn’t..” Christopher begins, but Alexander cuts him off, “I am not quite Alfa yet. And you are?” “Christopher Lansdale, my Lord.” “Lansdale. An honorfilled name to carry” “Thank you my Lord.” Something about Christopher submissive behavior annoy me deeply. He reacts as though we have been caught stealing candy, when in truth we had done nothing wrong. Like he was embarrassed to be found with me. The thought makes my cheeks flush with a sudden rush of anger. “Then why are you lurking around in a dark hallway befuddling this young lady?” Alexander’s voice is calm and collected, and he speaks like a am not even there, which is the last drop in my bucket. “We are in a very private little corridor kissing, not making a scene the middle of the main hall during lunch by breaking someone’s heart in two, so maybe you should mind your own business before you stick your nose into ours!” I spit out before I can stop to think of who I’m talking to. Christopher’s jaw drops to the floor as he glares at me like I’ve lost my mind completely, but I just cross my arms and shoot them both a mean look. In a flicker of a moment I think I see a small smile on Alexander’s lips, but then it’s gone, and he directs his focus back to Christopher. “Well, I’m walking here, so quite private is it not, is it?” He doesn’t wait for an answer, but continues, “Lansdale you can leave us, I wanna share a word with the young lady.” Christopher closes his mouth but still looks lost. He then looks apologetically at me, squeezes my hand quickly and turns on his heel and leaves. ‘Coward’ I think to myself, even though I know he doesn’t really have a choice. I turn my head to face Alexander, as I put up my chin to seem even more rebellious. To my surprise Alexander smiles. “Let’s go for a walk , you and I.”
