Chapter Six As Amanda chattered on, he wondered about Lady Deborah’s willingness to lend him to other women. What did it say about their relationship, that she happily passed him on for others to play with? Did it mean she didn’t care about him at all? It was true that she expressed little affection towards him. Her commands were usually curt and devoid of emotion. Even her desire for revenge, if that was what it was, appeared well under control. Or was it just her manner to be cool? Certainly she seemed keen enough to see more of him; he wasn’t just being tossed aside having served his purpose. Perhaps, he thought, she liked to lend him to other women because it made her feel powerful, able to demonstrate to others that he really was her piece of property, to be disposed of as she please
