The air inside the conservatory turned dense—like the world held its breath, waiting for her decision.
Lila wasn’t ready.
And yet, some part of her was already moving forward—heart first, soul unraveling in the gravity of him.
She turned away, needing space to think, but Asher’s voice stopped her.
“Tell me what you’re afraid of.”
She stared at her reflection in a cracked panel of glass. “Everything.”
He stepped closer.
“Try me.”
She swallowed hard. “I’m afraid this isn’t real. That I’m not me anymore. That I’m just… falling into you because something supernatural is making me.”
“Do you think that’s all this is?” His voice was a low thrum behind her. “Just magic?”
“I don’t know,” she whispered. “How am I supposed to know what’s real when everything I’ve ever known is falling apart?”
Silence.
And then, “You’re not just falling into me, Lila. You’re waking up.”
She turned, eyes stinging. “And what if I don’t like who I become?”
He stepped in close enough that she could feel the heat of his body.
“Then I’ll remind you of who you are,” he said, brushing a hand against her chest, right over her heart. “Every time. Every day.”
Tears prickled in her eyes, but she blinked them away. “This is insane.”
“I know,” he said. “But it’s ours.”
His words shouldn’t have calmed her—but they did. They grounded her, tethered her to this moment.
And then, the moment cracked.
A sharp pain jolted through her ribs.
She gasped and fell to her knees, clutching her chest.
Asher caught her instantly. “Lila!”
“I-it burns—” she choked out. “Something’s… inside…”
He pressed his hand to her back. “It’s the bond. It’s trying to stabilize without you.”
His jaw clenched. “I waited too long. I should’ve claimed you the moment I saw the signs.”
Her skin glowed faintly, veins pulsing with unnatural light.
She writhed in his arms, the pain intensifying.
“Make it stop!” she cried.
Asher looked into her eyes. “Do you trust me?”
Tears streaked her cheeks. She nodded, gasping.
“Then let me in.”
---
His hand cupped her cheek, and his lips found hers—desperate, searing, claiming.
It wasn’t just a kiss.
It was a merging.
A firestorm.
Her blood surged with heat, her body arching as something ancient threaded through her veins—his essence fusing with hers.
The conservatory trembled. The vines pulled away. The shadows outside recoiled.
And in that moment, everything stilled.
Asher pulled back slowly, searching her face.
“Are you okay?”
She nodded shakily, breathless. “What… just happened?”
“We completed the first seal,” he said. “Your body accepted the bond. The pain will stop—for now.”
“For now?” she echoed.
“There are three seals,” he said softly. “And each one brings us closer. Each one unlocks more of you.”
Her heart pounded. “More of me?”
“You were never meant to be just human, Lila,” he whispered. “Your bloodline carries power older than mine. That’s why the bond chose us.”
Her vision blurred. “I don’t understand…”
“You will. But for now, rest.”
She wanted to argue, wanted answers, but her body was already folding into him, exhausted, drained.
Asher caught her, lifting her with ease. He pressed a kiss to her forehead as her eyes fluttered shut.
“You’re mine now,” he whispered. “And I’ll burn the world before I let them take you.”
