Sun rays blinded me for a second as soon as I opened my eyes. I must have slept off while trying to wait out that hybrid. I rub my eyes. It was morning already. The birds were out singing. A chill runs through me as a breeze touches my skin.
This should feel like home if not for the hard wood against my back and bugs crawling into my shirt. I rub my arms to keep warm.
"Hey. You awake ?"
I spin my head around and i see Devon and Damien perched up on a tree beside me. Rachel was above me. Brian and Eden are on the same branch but on a farther tree locked in an embrace possibly to keep warm like me.
I turn back to Rachel above me. She smirks.
"Finally. Was beginning to think you liked it here."
Damien laughed.
"Yeah, we've all been awake for like 6 hours now if I had to guess."
What. Did i really sleep that long in these conditions. Guess I was really tired. I speak.
"So what happened while I was out ?"
Eden separates from Brian before she talks.
"Well more of those things came. They are up the rest of the bodies down there."
Her eyes looked puffy. She must have been crying. Fresh tears drop from them again.
Brian shielded her once more looking at me.
"Four people out of the thirty of us are dead because of those things in one day and now we have to stay for another."
Damien looked at his twin downcast. Had that much of us died. We stayed silent as if we were honouring our fallen brethren.
Someone's stomach growled. It wasn't any of us because we all said "Not it".
"Its me."
Kenzie spoke while coming out from the shrubbery below.
"I'm starving."
A bald guy in another tree shouted out.
"Are you mad ?. Do you want to get eaten ?.Climb back up."
She stepped around an eyeball wincing then looked up at him.
"Chill dude, I've been in a tree since I got into this forest. Ever since those things left four hours ago none have come back. I think they hunt towards night and early in the mornings too. Gotta eat. Who knows if they'll give us food when we get outta here."
Bald guy stared at her.
"Just like that. I watched you. You didn't even blink when they were torn apart. You're a monster."
Kenzie put her Palm on her face rubbing it.
" Look no offense to those that died but in our situation we cannot be dwelling on the past. They are gone. Period. You can stay there and cry all day. More food for me."
Sighing I started climbing down. I see my shoe at the bottom. Luckily it wasn't eaten and was still dry. No blood on it too. I put it on and shout to my group.
"C'mon guys, we don't really have a choice do we."
A hand rests on my back and my hair gets ruffled. Kenzie smirks at me.
"I knew I liked you."
I blush a little at the close contact.
Rachel comes down and glares at Kenzie.
I clear my throat.
"Uh all right let's get going."
About fifteen of us came down form the trees and walk around in search of food.
Someone can suggested killing one of the animals. He got a slap and several looks telling him to shut up.
"Over here."
A red haired hottie called out.
I get there and there is a berry bush. Blueberries.
Devon tries one and after some time smiles.
"I'm still alive. It's safe to eat guys."
Everyone goes to the bushes to get sustenance. I on the other hand just stand there awkwardly swaying back and forth on the soles of my feet.
Kenzie comes closer to me and offers me a handful of berries.
"Take. Eat."
I turn it down.
"Can't. I'm allergic."
Realization dawns on her.
"s**t. Sorry."
I shrug.
"Its okay. You didn't know. There is a stream to the north, I know where it is if anyone needs water."
She taps me again.
"Good. Maybe we could find some normal looking fish for you to eat."
My stomach grumbles at the thought. I blush.
"That would be great."
