Sophia's mother, Catherine, stood before her, eyes haunted.
"Sophia, I'm sorry," Catherine whispered. "I was trapped."
Sophia's mind reeled. "What do you mean?"
Catherine's gaze drifted. "The veil. It consumed me."
Elizabeth intervened. "Catherine, tell her the truth."
Catherine's eyes locked onto Sophia's.
"I made a pact," Catherine said, her voice barely audible. "With the shadows."
Sophia's heart sank.
"What pact?" Sophia demanded.
Catherine's expression turned desperate.
"I traded our family's legacy for power."
Sophia's world crumbled.
"What power?" Sophia whispered.
Catherine's eyes gleamed.
"The power to control Ravenswood."
The guardians stirred.
"You shouldn't have told her," one growled.
Catherine stood tall.
"Sophia deserves the truth."
Suddenly, the veil began to ripple.
A figure emerged from the shadows.
"Lilith," Catherine whispered.
...Lilith's eyes blazed.
"You've betrayed me, Catherine."
Catherine stood firm, despite the fear etched on her face.
"I won't let you harm Sophia," Catherine declared.
Lilith sneered. "You're no match for me."
Sophia stepped forward, determination burning within.
"I won't let you hurt my mother," Sophia said, her voice steady.
Lilith's gaze locked onto Sophia.
"Ah, the daughter," Lilith purred. "So like her mother."
Elizabeth intervened, her voice commanding.
"Lilith, leave Sophia alone."
Lilith's smile grew.
"We'll see about that," Lilith whispered, vanishing into the shadows.
