Chapter One

1320 Words
Delilah’s POV I woke up to the ‘lovely’ sound of my alarm clock. I let out a sigh. It was only 6:30. Why did I have to get up so early? Training, that’s why. I looked out my window. It’s late August 2020. The time of year when you leave the house in a sweater and regret it by afternoon. I slugged out of bed. I had stayed up too late perfecting my mom’s lasagna recipe that I love so much. My mom passed it down to me and it’s a right of passage to add your own little secret ingredient. My mom had learned to make her Italian sausage from scratch (which is to die for), I however, have perfected my ricotta cheese to cream cheese ratio. Let me tell you! Mmm! Anyway, I needed to shower before training like I did every weekday morning. I went to my dresser and grabbed my softest pair of black leggings and a dark purple sports bra to go with it. Purple is my favorite color. I don’t love training but this outfit fits my frame perfectly. I got out of the shower and for a brief moment I caught a glimpse of the young girl I used to be. I remember not being able to wait for the curvy hips, the boobs, the long legs. Well now I’m 20, 5’ 8” and I have to say, happy with my shape. My favorite features, if I’m being honest, are my freckled porcelain skin and hazel eyes. My dark curly hair compliments the rest very well. I need to get dressed. My stomach growled at the same time Demi, my wolf, said good morning “Good morning Demi.” She was amazing. I met her on my first shift when I turned 18. In our pack, everyone got their wolf at that age. It was beautiful but also scary and painful. Thankfully I had my mom and sister there with me, Katy and Daphne. My mom Katy is the pack's best baker. She makes the most wonderful cinnamon bread. The smell alone draws in the customers. Daphne has a career as an attorney. She is a brilliant legal mind and therefore the most requested. Needless to say, she has a very high success rate. I went downstairs to the kitchen to make some toast and grab an apple. I love our house. I still live with my family. In line with pack tradition, you stay with your family until you find your mate. Daphne was lucky, she found her mate almost immediately after she turned 18. Daphne was happy with Josh and that’s all I could ask for. The moon goddess decides your mate and I often wonder when I would meet mine. Maybe I don’t have one, maybe I do. I don’t mind either way. I love my life as it is now. My mom and dad came downstairs together. My dad is the head manager at the movie theater I work at. He needs to go in early today because we had new movies come in and he needs to get ready. I am so excited about that. My mom always gets up way before me. She opens her bakery at 10 and she needs time to make some fresh bread before her customers get there. She has to be at the bakery early every morning to bake all that lovely bread. Fortunately, there's a lot of downtime while the dough rises and the bakery is close enough that mom can come home to see us off and have breakfast with us. Otherwise, we may not see her too often. “Good morning Delilah,” my dad said still trying to shake off his sleep “Good morning honey,” said my mom with a flash of her beautiful smile. She really is beautiful. She has light brown hair, pale skin, and green eyes. My dad matched her perfectly. He was tan with graying black hair and a beard to match. He has dark brown eyes that can show so much emotion. He’s a couple inches taller than mom which made them more perfect. My mom is 5’10 and my dad is 6' 1. I hope my mate's bond is as special as theirs. If I even have one. It’s been almost 3 years now since I turned 18. I wasn't so confident anymore. It wasn’t unusual to find your mate later than 18, it just sucked to have to wait. Birthdays can also trigger mate bonds. The week surrounding your birthday leaves an opening for growth and change. Meaning the bond won’t hit until a certain age. I like to think it’s all part of the moon goddess’s plan. From what I was taught you feel the mate bond almost instantly. It’s like an invisible pull to each other. An intense feeling of love and desire to be with one another. A need to care for each other. When one feels pain the other feels pain and the need to fix their wounds mentally or physically is just that, it’s a need. But that’s just what I heard. I was anxious to find out for myself. “Good morning,” I said to them with a smile. “I love you guys, I gotta go!” On my way to the door, I stopped grabbed my black and white Adidas windbreaker, and zipped it halfway up. It’s perfect to jog to training in, especially in the morning. I was already running late for training. “I’ll see you at 3” my dad called out to me. I work the night shift but always go in early to see if he needs help. As soon as I got to the training ground I ran into my best friends Amelia and Zander. It was always a shock to see Zander hang out with Amelia and I. We were only gammas and Zander had alpha blood. His brother is Alpha Tobias. Even thinking his name gave me chills. Every time I saw him sucked me back to my childhood when he would tease me over small things. He didn't always make fun of me, but when I was 15 I needed braces. The first time I went to hang out with Zander at his house, Tobias noticed and instantly made fun of me. He absolutely loved to call me “train tracks”, another favorite he opted to was “metal mouth”. It all went downhill from there. Either my clothes were too big or too small, when I went through puberty I got acne and he would call me pizza face. I think he saw it as a game and I would laugh it off, but deep down it hurt hearing that from him. Especially since he was my first crush. I pulled myself from the haunting thoughts. “Hey guys,” I said, jogging up to them. Trying to force my breathing under control. “Hey Delilah Rose,” they said in unison, making us all giggle. That was my nickname. I love roses. “I see you jogged here again,” Zander said. “Yup, what’s the point in driving? You know I only live a half mile away it’s pointless not to. Plus I was running late anyway.” He just looked at me, not at all surprised I was running late which made Amelia start laughing. “Ok ok we all know I’m always late no need to point it out,” I said giggling and rolling my eyes dramatically. Everyone has to train until they pass all the tests, Amelia and I were almost done and Zander graduates in a few weeks so we were in different training zones. I’m not sure what Zander was doing today but we had sparring in our zone. On the mat.. in front of everyone.
