Delilah’s POV
I watched as Amelia threw the finishing right hook to her opponent. She’s shorter than I am but uses that to her advantage, she may be short but she is also very fast. She trains harder because of it, meaning she is a force to be reckoned with.
I was next to go. I was nervous like always, I’m a great fighter, I just don’t like fighting. My opponent is Julie, she’s nice. I don't know her very well but we’ve trained together a few times. This is our first time sparring, however.
The first couple of minutes we went back and forth. She would punch, and I would dodge. I would punch and she would dodge. It was almost like a dance. I was thinking about it right when I felt her land a punch to my jaw.
I felt eyes on me as my anger bubbled up just a little. That wasn’t going to happen again. I spit at the mat noticing blood. She must’ve made my tooth puncture my lip. I threw my hands up to block my face as she swung again. I dodged, landing a punch to her ribs. She shouldn’t have left those open. We traded back and forth for a while. As we were catching our breath I heard people whispering. I could see out of the corner of my eye that Zander was talking to someone.
It was Tobias. Why was he here? It’s not weird, Tobias and his beta Roman show up to see us all training to see where we are at progress-wise. But that was usually at quarter checkups. Was something wrong?
Julie landed a punch to the side of my head which made me stumble back. I guess she saw that and tried to use it to her advantage because she launched at me. I tried to dodge before she crashed into me feeling the gust of wind as she just barely brushed past me. We spar until someone can’t get up or tap out. As werewolves we don’t feel pain as strongly as humans and we heal much faster.
All the commotion must’ve gotten Zander’s attention because he and his brother were walking over to us. I don’t know why I was so distracted but Julie was able to land the last blow that made me fall to the mat. I couldn’t get back up, not right away. I barely noticed the most pleasing scent of sandalwood and pine.
“Julie, great job! Delilah you gotta work on keeping your arms up if you want to block her punches.” The instructor yelled out “Clear off the mat! Melinda! Eliza! You're up.”
“Ugh why did he have to show up” I thought in my head, a flash of anger bubbled inside. “I'm a good fighter there is no reason he should have distracted me” the years of torment flooded back.
“Delilah,” Amelia called to me. Zander made his way over too.
“Why was your brother here?” I snapped at him.
“He just needed to remind me about dinner with my mom. It’s her anniversary and it’s still hard on her, you know?” He said.
Guilt overwhelmed me. “That’s today? I'm so sorry I forgot I was up late making lasagna.” I felt horrible forgetting that it’s a yearly thing they do for their mom.
“That’s okay,” he said, giving me a small smile. “Do you guys wanna go get lunch?”
Amelia looked at me at the same time I looked at her “Yes” we both said. Zander chuckled knowing we never turn down food, especially after training.
We were sitting in a cute little diner I love. I was waiting on my cheeseburger and fries, paired with a strawberry milkshake that was so good this diner should have an award just for that. Amelia was waiting on her chicken Caesar salad and Zander was having a chicken fried steak with mashed potatoes and corn.
“Do you think we will find our mates soon?” Amelia asked us. She still hasn’t met hers yet either.
“Does it matter?” I said, rolling my eyes jokingly, they know I don’t mind either way.
“I can’t wait to meet mine,” Zander said
“Awe how hopelessly romantic of you Zander,” I said poking him. He blushed and chuckled.
“It's tradition to want a mate”
“I know but what if I don’t have one? What if I do and they reject me? I hear that pain is horrible. Maybe my bond is someone I know and the bond just hasn’t kicked in yet. That happens you know” I said in a single breath.
“Rarely,” Amelia said, taking her turn to roll her eyes at me jokingly. “You know the moon goddess has a plan for you who are we to question it” She was just as wise as she was pretty. She had straight blond hair that framed her heart-shaped face perfectly.
She was short and thin with curves in all the right places making boys constantly drool over her. Her dark blue eyes matched her olive skin tone beautifully. Her smile alone could light up a room.
Zander was also his kind of beautiful. He was quite taller than us at 6’3, alpha families are always bigger and stronger and faster, and since he had alpha blood he was too. He has brown eyes dirty blond hair and features that are so sharp he could’ve been chiseled from marble. Thanks to all his training you could see his frame through almost everything he wore. He had broad shoulders making every shirt tight. All the girls loved him. Amelia and I looked at him like a brother. He’s only older than me by a month but he will never let me forget.
We all met in middle school when the alpha at the time, Thomas, Zander’s dad, saved Daphne, and I from a rogue attack while we were out for a walk. We all knew the Alpha and Luna of our pack, but at the time my mom was baking from home and my dad had just started at the movie theater. So we were very low in the ranks. They took us to their home, immediately called our parents and cleaned up the cuts my sister and I had gotten from dodging trees while trying to run back to the territory. Luna Sarah and my mom hit it off instantly and have been best friends ever since! That night I met Zander. We were only 13 then, and shortly after I started 8th grade I met Amelia. I don’t remember too much about what happened that day but it’s why we train so hard now. The rogue attacks have gotten out of hand.
Rogues are wolves who have either been banished from or decided to leave the pack. They are generally nonviolent and don’t work together but we try to avoid them anyways. There are a few out there who still think violence solves all problems.
I didn’t realize I was lost in thought until Amelia started snapping in front of my eyes “Hello anyone home?”
“Sorry sorry, I was thinking about when we met I’m glad I have you both. I love you guys.”
“And we love you,” they both said as they hugged me.
Tobias’s POV
I woke up this morning around 7. I need to get to the office soon so I can leave early for my mom's dinner. She was still struggling with losing my dad. We all were.
“Good morning,” Toby said to me. He’s my wolf.
“Good morning Toby”
I got ready in one of my typical black suits with a white button-up and started heading towards my office. There were a lot of things to get done so I could leave early. Being alpha means taking care of the entire pack. Protecting the territory, making sure our farms are producing enough food. Making sure our warriors are training and graduating on time. Speaking of training, Zander should be at the training grounds. I need to remind him of dinner.
I decided to swing by on my way to work. When I got there I let him finish his set before I called him over “Don’t forget we have dinner tonight at Moon Crest restaurant, reservation is at 8. Don’t be late!
“I won’t be, I know how important this is to Mom,” he said giving me a reassuring look. He did know how important it was, but I still needed to make sure he knew.
That’s when I got the whiff of an intoxicating scent. It is the most wonderful, mouth-watering scents of vanilla, cinnamon, and the finest hint of roses. I looked around and tried to place the scent. When I did that’s when I saw her. She looked like Delilah, the girl my brother always hung out with. I remember all the times I used to pick on her. She was my first crush. Why can I smell her? She must’ve sensed I was staring because I watched her get punched and stumble back. I had a weird urge to rush to her instantly pushing it aside.
She didn’t let it faze her. She got back up and they started exchanging blows for a while. I could swear it was almost like a dance. My phone started ringing, I looked down at the screen, it was Roman my Beta.
“Hello Alpha, there was a sighting of rogues on the west end of our territory. They got away before we could ID them.” He let out a sigh. “We’ll catch them next time.”
“Them?”
“Yes, them. I know it’s unusual but that’s how they got away. There were 4 or 5 of them and they all split in different ways and we just couldn’t find their scent again”.
“Rogues don’t usually run around together, maybe with 1 other if they have a mate but beyond that, it’s unusual.” I shook my head
“Thank you, Roman, I'll be back at the office soon.” I hung up my phone and waved goodbye to my brother stealing one last look at Delilah, why did she smell so good?
