Chapter 3: Drowning Fish (3)

1126 Words
Over the past few days, I seemed to have adapted to the identity of Mu Xiayun and even developed a mother-daughter-like bond with Mrs. Yin. The people around me seemed to have accepted my "temporary amnesia," finding no oddity in my vastly different behavior post-surgery. Additionally, there was some excellent news: after spending over a month in this upscale private room, the doctors finally cleared me for discharge after repeated evaluations! Having heard only negative comments about hospital food, experiencing it firsthand proved it was indeed unappetizing… Fortunately, Mrs. Yin's meticulous care, Li Anna's frequent visits, and Cheng Haixia's daily delivery of my favorite foods made my hospital stay bearable. However, I haven't seen the cold man from that night again, and I remain unaware of his identity, which bothers me. Reflecting, I changed out of my hospital gown. Mrs. Yin brought me several outfits in the morning, suggesting I choose what to wear. These clothes were mostly dark shades, neither overly extravagant nor understated enough to hide their elegance. They seemed to center on mysterious black, adorned with subtle yet distinctive designs, exuding a subdued yet bold sensuality. I recall hearing that what one wears can reveal their personality. I think Mu Xiayun must have been a cool and capable woman. Choosing the most understated piece, I realized this woman had a fantastic figure that made anything look good... But everyone has flaws. Mu Xiayun had a good family background, a loving mother, a pretty face, and people who loved her, yet she was fatherless and nearly lost her life to heart disease. Remembering the lingering sadness and indifference in my eyes every time I looked in the mirror... Indeed, one needs family and health to be happy. Lost in thought, I didn't hear Mrs. Yin calling me several times. "What are you thinking about? You're about to be discharged, yet you look so worried." I forced a smile, pretending to be fine, "Nothing, I'm just… afraid I won't be used to it." "Silly child, what's there to not get used to in your own home." Having spent a month adjusting to this body and hospital life, I now faced a new environment. Beyond Mrs. Yin, Li Anna, and Cheng Haixia, there would be more people to encounter. What awaited me? Could I handle it well? Looking at the woman in the mirror, unease rippled and expanded within me. Mrs. Yin sensed my worries, came over, and caressed my cheek, "Don't worry, Xiayun." "I've told them about your post-surgery symptoms. Even if you don't remember things for a while, everyone will understand." "Really?" I felt slightly reassured by her comfort. "Silly girl, when have I ever lied to you." She adjusted my collar, "All you need to do is rest and recover well. Be a obedient little princess by my side, a wise little wife to your husband, and stop running to nightclubs to cause trouble for your husband every night…" "I understand." I nodded, then hesitated, "Wait." Eyes wide, my voice rose, "Mom, what did you say!" "What? I said to take care of your health." "No! The next sentence!" "To be a obedient little princess by my side?" "No, no! The next!" "To be a wise little wife to your husband?" "Husband!?" I was shocked. Eyes wide, I stammered, "Mom! Am I… married?" Mrs. Yin looked at me quizzically, tilting her head, "Yes… I heard he came to see you as soon as he returned. I thought you knew." Came to see me as soon as he returned… Could it be…! "I rushed here as soon as the plane landed, but I was still late, sorry… I promised to be the first person you saw when you woke up…" "I failed, sorry…" Could it be... "Xiayun, whenever you remember our memories, just remember I'm the most important man in your life." He held my hand, his warm, large palm covering it gently, "I'm Cheng Haixia, you've called me Hai since childhood, don't forget." Cheng Haixia… is her husband!? No wonder he brings food every day, cares for me so meticulously… I thought he was a boyfriend, turns out they're married! Seeing my stunned expression, Mrs. Yin was concerned, "Xiayun, what's wrong? Your face doesn't look right." I waved my hands, "No, I'm just… shocked." "It's okay, you have time, you'll remember eventually." She smiled, pinching my cheek. About to respond, Mrs. Yin's phone rang. After a brief conversation, she looked at me apologetically, "Xiayun, something happened at the company, I have to go. I'm sorry." I smiled at her, "It's fine, Mom, go! I'll…" I was about to say I could take a taxi, but realized I didn't know where I lived, leaving me mouth agape. Mrs. Yin pondered, then realized something, "I'll have your husband pick you up." "Huh?" Before I could say more, Mrs. Yin's phone rang again. She apologized, patted my head, grabbed her briefcase, and left, answering the phone. "A workaholic…" I mumbled, my phone ringing just then. "Xiayun, you're being discharged today." "I'll pick you up, don't wander off." I hastily responded and hung up, staring at the ended call screen. Mrs. Yin just left, and Cheng Haixia called, how efficient! But... Husband? Recalling Cheng Haixia's intimate actions and unguarded hints, my face reddened again. No wonder he was so nice, so familiar with Mu Xiayun. It's not surprising he's her husband. Remembering his attentiveness, my unease faded. He should be reliable? If someone takes care of you, life won't be that tough. I thought, remembering I sent clothes to the seventh floor laundry an hour ago, they weren't back yet! I rushed out, not wanting Cheng Haixia to wait. Mrs. Yin barely let me handle chores, insisting I rest. This luxurious room even had a washing machine, lacking nothing for daily needs, so I rarely left. Thus, I got lost. God knows where I ended up, I finally asked a nurse for directions, exhausted, carrying the basket back. Leaning on the wall, struggling with the basket in the corridor, a stretcher approached. "Make way! Emergency patient!" The nurse's urgent voice echoed, and people scrambled aside. Carrying a big basket, I was caught off guard, colliding with someone. The basket dropped, thankfully clothes stayed in, I sighed in relief, apologizing immediately. "It's okay." He replied, bending to pick up the basket. I looked up to thank him, our eyes met, and the 'thanks' stuck in my throat. Before I could grasp what was happening, my heart contracted painfully. In the next moment, my legs weakened, and I stumbled, but he caught me. Feeling his strong hand, I looked up at his face, meeting a clear-eyed, handsome visage, and my mind uncontrollably burst with a series of vague memories!
