Chapter 2

839 Words
The sound of the door opening pulled Xavier out of his reverie. He didn’t need to look up to know who it was. “Had that dream again, didn’t you?” a familiar voice asked. Xavier glanced at the man standing in the doorway. His secretary, Liam, was more than just an employee—he was a close friend. Liam’s easygoing demeanor was a contrast to Xavier’s brooding intensity, but it made their friendship work. “Hmm,” Xavier replied, leaning back in his chair, his gaze distant. Liam stepped into the office, shutting the door behind him. “Do you really think it’s true?” he asked, his tone half-curious, half-skeptical. “It is,” Xavier said with quiet certainty. “What exactly happened? I mean, this whole thing—why does it haunt you so much?” Liam pressed, settling into the chair across from him. Xavier let out a sigh, rubbing his temples as the memory came rushing back. “It was in a garden,” he began, his voice soft and reflective. “I was just a kid, holding my mother’s hand. She was showing me flowers. I remember her kneeling beside me, pointing at the blooms and asking which one I liked the most.” --- Flashback The garden was like something out of a fairytale—rows upon rows of flowers in every color imaginable. The sweet scent of roses and jasmine filled the air, and the soft hum of bees blended with the distant laughter of children playing. Xavier’s tiny hand was snug in his mother’s as she crouched beside him, her gentle voice guiding him. “What about this one, Xavier?” she asked, pointing to a vibrant yellow tulip. “Or do you like the red roses better which one you want ?” He wrinkled his nose, his young mind unable to decide. “I don’t know,” he mumbled, shifting his gaze around the garden. And then he saw her. She was spinning in circles, her red frock flaring out like the petals of a rose in full bloom. Her laughter was the first thing that caught his attention—soft, joyful, and free, like a song carried on the breeze. Xavier froze, his small frame going rigid as his eyes locked onto her. His grip on his mother’s hand loosened, and without a second thought, he let go. “Xavier?” his mother called, but he didn’t respond. His feet were already moving toward the girl, drawn by a force he couldn’t explain. She stopped spinning when she noticed him, her wide, curious eyes meeting his. For a moment, neither of them spoke, the world around them fading away. Xavier raised a hand, pointing at her with a childlike confidence. “I want her, Mom,” he declared, his voice steady despite his young age. His mother, who had caught up to him, looked at him in surprise. “Xavier, what are you talking about?” she asked gently, trying to suppress a smile. But Xavier wasn’t listening. His gaze remained fixed on the girl, who now smiled at him—a radiant, innocent smile that seemed to light up the entire garden. End of Flashback ......... Xavier blinked, the memory fading as he returned to the present. When he glanced at Liam, his friend’s lips were twitching, clearly trying to hold back laughter. But Liam’s composure didn’t last long. He burst out laughing, shaking his head in disbelief. “Sorry,” Liam said between chuckles, holding up his hands in mock surrender. “But you can’t be serious, Xavier. You’re still hung up on this?” Xavier’s expression didn’t waver. His jaw tightened, and his piercing gaze silenced Liam’s laughter. “I’m damn serious,” Xavier replied, his voice cold and firm. Liam’s amusement faded as he leaned forward, resting his elbows on the desk. “Okay, fine. Let’s assume you are. Where is she now?” “I don’t know,” Xavier admitted, his voice tinged with frustration. “But I’ll find her. No matter what, I’ll find her. Because day by day, it’s becoming harder to live without her.” Liam raised an eyebrow, his tone skeptical but not mocking. “And what if she doesn’t remember you? .” A small, almost feral smile tugged at Xavier’s lips. His eyes burned with a mix of determination and obsession. “She will,” he said, his voice low and resolute. “I’ll make her remember.” Liam exhaled, shaking his head. “Man, you’re something else. But if anyone can pull this off, it’s you.” Xavier didn’t respond. He leaned back in his chair, staring out at the city skyline once more. His fingers tapped against the armrest rhythmically, as if plotting his next move. Somewhere out there, she was waiting for him. She had to be. And when he found her, he would do whatever it took to make her his—just like he had promised himself all those years ago.
